What is your favorite thing about F&M? My favorite thing about F&M is the phenomenal learning experience and close-knit community feel. I love that my classes are small enough to enjoy discussions and really engage with material as well as my professors. F&M has given me the unique experience of collaborating with professors on a professional level, whether as a tutor at the writing center, doing Hackman or Marshall Fellow research, or being a preceptor. It’s a rare opportunity made commonplace thanks to our close-knit community.
A lot of people know you as the girl who has published a book, but what other talent do you have? Is there something you are equally as passionate about? “The girl who published a book.” haha. I should have that written on my tombstone. I do love to write, but as my major might suggest, I have many other passions. I also love animals, traveling, the outdoors, and marine biology to name a few. I could list a hundred places I’d love to visit and talk your ear off about how much I love dinoflagellate bioluminescence or how fascinating dolphin echolocation is! Seriously though, Youtube dinoflagellates fluorescing…you won’t be sorry! :)
What advice would you give to aspiring writers? Write. Read. Read. Read. Write some more. Honestly, this is the best advice I can give. Everyone always asks me how I can possibly find the time to write a novel and the favorite excuse of any budding writer is “I’d love to write a novel if I could just find the time.” The time is there–hidden in that hour long Tuesday nap and Saturday afternoon Netflix binge we’re all guilty of. We should always be able to find the time to do the things we want to do and achieve our goals. Only you are standing in the way of achieving your dreams. Find the time and make it happen! …and I wasn’t kidding about that reading thing; why not learn from the best!
Where is your go to place to write and focus? For creative writing, I don’t like writing at home. I like the setting of a nice cafe to get those creative juices flowing (Mean Cup is my personal favorite!). But if I’m writing academically, I can either be found in sweatpants on my couch with a computer in my lap or hunkered down in SHAD.
Ben or John? Ben? Inventing things is always cool.
