1. What aspect of F&M continues to make it still exciting to be a student?
The size of the campus is best part because walking from one place to another, I’ll see a bunch of people I know, which feels great, but there are many more I do not know so I can meet someone new every day. I think the size also helps me feel empowered that I can plan an event, get funding and do something I like that will add to the campus culture.
2. Could you talk a bit about what I.M.P.A.C.T. is and any cool upcoming events?
Our Annual Male Auction is coming up in November. It is always so much fun and we have a lot of talented first-years that are going to put on a great show. The money will mostly be going to Attollo, a local nonprofit educational program for kids looking to succeed and go to college. Last year we had a student get a $500 book scholarship for his first year at Temple University.
3. When you are not busy with clubs and academics, what’s one thing you do to escape some of the stress?
My two favorite things to do in my downtime is shoot pool at Ben’s Underground and write some spoken word poetry. Writing is my passion and LIFT is a group on campus that gets a lot of talented people together to bounce ideas off of each other and create some moving stuff.
4. So I hear you dabble in some spoken word, what advice would you give to someone who wanted to start writing spoken word?
I spoke word does not have to be all about social justice and equality or hardship, but it is very personal. My advice is honesty: be honest in your writing and on stage. It is therapeutic to be able to speak on your insecurities and have an audience of people truly listen to you, even if its for a few short minutes.
5. Do you have a favorite spoken word artist or a favorite line to share?
My favorite spoken word group is The Striver’s Row, specifically Joshua Bennett. His poem Transatlantic Love Manifesto is my favorite and I memorized it! Check it out on YouTube.
6. Ben or John?
I have to say John because he gets less love. Also I wrote my supplemental essay to get into F&M on John Marshall!
