I’m Not an Only Child: 5 Ways You Know That You Have a Brother

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at F and M chapter.

Being an older sibling is full of stress and pride. This is because you are the firstborn, hence the one who your predecessors (aka your siblings) will (or should) essentially look up to. Although that is a lot of pressure for one person to uphold, it also gives you a sense of pride of knowing that you’re making a difference in someone else’s life. As for myself, I am the oldest of one brother. We are only one year apart, so we pretty much grew up experiencing the same things together. However, whether you have a large age gap between your brother or not, here are 5 experiences that anyone with a brother can relate to.

1. You’ll always have a second closet

One of my favorite things about having a sibling is that his/her closet is also mine. Whenever I feel as if I have nothing to wear, I find comfort in knowing that I don’t have to go to the mall because my sibling will almost always have something that I could wear. One of the perks of specifically having a brother is the ability to never have to buy t-shirts or pajamas because my brother’s t-shirts and graphic tees will eventually become mine. Let’s face it – guys clothes are just unusually more comfortable than girls’.

2. The difficulty in reconciling arguments

One of the rules in the sibling code is to be petty at all times. That’s just how the universe created that relationship.

3. Embarrassing your brother

I feel like when you’re the older sibling you always feel the need to embarass your sibling.

4. Engaging in random mischievous pranks towards your brother

Sometimes it’s easy to just pull pranks on your brother because he’s your brother. No matter how old you may be, some things will never get old.

5. Not going to an event when one of you isn’t going

One of the nice things about having a brother is knowing that there is solidarity in doing something that you both don’t want to do. I don’t know if it’s the same with sisters, but I have experienced plenty of moments when I told my parents that I don’t want to go somewhere with them and my brother simply agreed. To put it simply, without one party having a greater number than the other, my parents had no choice but to let us do what we wanted. #siblinggoals

At the end of the day, siblings will always be there for you no matter what.
