Can a Bra Make or Break Your Confidence?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at F and M chapter.

Sexy. What does sexy mean to you?

Have you ever felt powerful, confident, and just plain sexy? A lot of lingerie companies like Aerie and Victoria’s Secret proudly depict beautiful models confidently parading in beautiful lingerie and undergarment as if they are a warrior’s uniform that gives them the right amount of self-esteem that makes the world seem bearable.

For the longest time I never quite understood the allure of these marketing campaigns and advertisements. Yes, I was in awe and maybe slightly jealous at the perfect figures and beautiful things that these models were portraying, but deep down I was secretly more jealous at the confidence that oozed out of these girls that seemed to stem from… underwear?

I recently bought a bralette from Victoria’s Secret because I figured that I should try out the trend of peek-a-boo bralettes to see what the hype was all about. It seemed like a cute and fashionable way to style an outfit, and I was all about trying that out. I was prepared to feel the thrill of excitement over wearing and owning something pretty, after all, #treatyoself, but I wasn’t prepared for the feeling that came after wearing a bra.

I’m not quite sure if it’s because I’ve been sucked into the marketing ploys of the underwear/lingerie industry, but boy did I feel sexy! There was definitely something about wearing something that I loved and felt good in that gave me a boost of confidence. When I looked in the mirror, I could honestly say to myself, “oh hey girl! YOU LOOK GOOD!” I don’t think that I’ve ever been so happy to compliment myself (pat myself on the back for that – I should do that more often)! There’s also something about doing something that no one else knows that gives it a sly feeling.

At the end of the day, I learned that no matter what I am wearing, I should feel confident in who I am. I don’t think that there’s nothing wrong with getting a little confidence boost from your outfit. After all, fashion is a form of personal expression and your style should represent you.

That bra made me feel confident, fancy, and just plain sexy! Who knew that a bra could have such a power?

Have you ever felt empowered or super confident from clothes or even accessories?
