8 Types of People You’ll Meet on Your Hall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at F and M chapter.

The Gamer

He never leaves his room and doesn’t say much when you do see him. He’s a nice guy, he’d just rather stare at a screen than go to parties. Whether he’s playing Halo or Smash Bros, you know where to find him. And hey, sometimes The Gamer might be really great with computers and be willing to help you out when you just can’t seem to connect your laptop to the campus WiFi (which will probably happen a lot more than you’d expect).

The Partier

You’ll always know her the second you see her. She owns dozens of crop tops and heels. As soon as Thursday night rolls around, there’s hip hop or pop blasting out of her dorm room. You’ll see numerous guys and girls flooding in and out of her room and you’ll wonder why your HA never seems to notice. If you happen to be in the hall around two in the morning, you’ll see her slowly making her way to her room, smelling a little like a frat dancefloor. She’s probably a ton of fun to hit up parties with, but doing so four or five nights a week will usually be too much for most people.

The Academic

Like the gamer, she rarely leaves her room. If she does venture out, it’s to go to the library. This girl is probably seriously focused on earning good grades in order to get into med, law, or graduate school. She’ll make a great study partner, but you probably won’t want to listen to her talk about Nabokov’s prose technique for an hour.

The Lax Bro (or just The Athlete)

This guy is hard to miss. While he usually spends his weekend like The Partier, during the week he is committed to getting up early and attending every single practice and game. He’s usually a great guy, but might be a little too forward when you see him out on the weekends. He lives by the motto “work hard, play hard”. He takes his sport seriously, but when it’s off season or he doesn’t have a game the next day, he enjoys his time off. You’ll see him carrying his gear around constantly and he often moves in a pack of other guys on his team.

The Music Kid

This guy will be either incredibly outgoing or extremely shy. He’ll love nearly all kinds of music and you’ll always hear it coming out of his room. Whether he’s a guitarist in a rock band or plays the cello in the school orchestra, you’ll always hear him practicing too. Most of his time will be spent in the music building on campus. Usually, these types of guys are more sensitive than some others. Plus, he’ll be able to give you great new music suggestions.

The Socialite

She’s a little different from the partier. While she’ll probably go out a lot and be constantly coming and going from her room, it’s usually because she has dozens of club meetings to attend. She’ll most likely be in every type of club you could imagine and have a huge array of different types of friend groups. Sometimes you may wonder whether or not her interest in you is merely networking, but overall she’s a pretty cool gal!

The Campus Activist

No matter what he stands for, you’ll know. He’ll have signs on his door and constantly post on Facebook about all of the different causes he supports. It’ll be hard to have a conversation without some organization he volunteers for cropping up while you’re talking. A huge perk of this is if you happen to be interested in the same causes. Then you have someone who shares your passion for helping other people, or animals, or the environment, or really whatever.

The International Student

You might be able to immediately tell where she’s from or have no clue, but no doubt it will be very different from where you call home. She’ll probably be pretty quiet at first, as she’s trying to adjust to college, but she’ll most likely be incredibly eager to meet other people. Make an effort to get to know her and you guys could really hit it off. If she needs help with something that’s different from how things are at home, explain it to her or figure it out with her. It’ll be a great chance for both of you to learn about different cultures.
