Signs You’ve Been Doing Too Much Exercise

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

We all know that exercise is good for us. We are told this all the time and the assumption is that the more you do, the better for you it is. But with it being January- meaning everyone feels the need to be the fittest they could be- we all need to know our limts

So these are the signs that mean that you have been pushing it to hard and need to actually do less exercise:

1.       Are you tired all the time? Your workouts used to fill you with energy and a buzz, but now drain you even more and all you want to do is sleep

2.       You arn’t making progress? You are running 5 times a week but arnt seeing any results in your speed or stamina?

3.       You are hungry all the time? I mean ALL the time. As in: You could eat three bowls of potatoes and still want more food?

4.       You feel like you never have time to enjoy life. You are either doing uni work or working out. You miss nights out to fit in a late night gym sesh, and miss socials to fit in a quick workout

5.       You keep getting ill. Had a cold for two weeks that won’t budge? Feel like every muscle in your body keeps aching? Chances are you arnt resting enough and letting your body heal

6.       All you can think about is the next workout. You really don’t care about anything else except getting in a good workout. If your muscles arnt hurting then you think you haven’t been working hard enough. And if you can walk after leg day, then you definitely haven’t been working hard enough!!!

If any of these sound like you chances are you are actually working too hard. Working out for an hour a day may appear to be a healthy thing but actually overdoing it will tire you out, give you hormonal issues, could lead to depression and weight gain and won’t allow your body to heal itself for the next workout.

So whilst this article IS NOT telling you to never exercise (I mean come on that’s plain ridiculous, everyone needs exercise) this article IS telling you to listen to your body. Don’t push it and even if you are training for a marathon or a bikini pro competition overdoing it will tire you out and make you ill. So take rest days. Switch up the routine and listen to your body.
