Her Campus Meets: The Winners of the SABB Elections

Sunday, February 19, 2012

We’ve heard their manifestos, we’ve seen their successful campaigns but do you really know your new guild committee?

Once a year, Exeter students find themselves confronted by an onslaught of catchy jingles and constant harassment: all in aid of the Students’ Guild Sabbatical elections. Yet, with the new committee announced, the disrupted campus has been able to resume its normal routine. Her Campus took the chance to catch up with your new student representatives and meet the personalities behind the slogans.

We chat to: Nick "Welshy" Davies (President), Jon Bagnall (PAC), Imogen Sanders (Academic Affairs) and Grace Hopper (VP Welfare and Community).

Nick ‘Welshy’ Davies (President)

In ten years time I see myself… Working for an International Law firm, hopefully abroad.

If I had to take 3 possessions and one person with me on a desert island I would take… My Kindle, Alcohol, An I-pod brimming with music and Ray Mears to teach me how to live comfortably - what could be better!

I describe my personal style as… I don't really have a personal style - this is definitely something I need to work on!

I really wish I hadn’t… Spent so much time committed to my societies/working in the Guild Bars and spent more time committed to my degree!

You may not know this about me but… I am a member of the West and Mid Brecon Cave Rescue Team and have been since I was 16.

Jon Bagnall (PAC)

In 10 years’ time I see myself… In a successful job which hopefully would have paid off the student loan. Also a wife and one or two kids wouldn’t be a bad thing either.

If I had to take 3 possessions and one person with me on a desert island I would take… My iPod, a Frisbee and camera, along with Megan Fox.

I describe my personal style as… Casual/sporty.

I really wish I hadn’t… Run into a wall whilst playing in a Frisbee tournament which caused me to break my arm. It hurt, I was in a cast for a month and worst of all we lost that game.

You may not know this about me but… I am hugely tidy (slightly verging on OCD...) Some would say it’s a good thing but my housemates hate it as it makes them realise how untidy they are.

Imogen Sanders (Academic Affairs)

In ten years time I’ll probably be… Looking far too old for uni but probably still hanging around HE doing something, hopefully researching and writing.

If I had to take 3 possessions and one person with me on a desert island I would take… Insect repellent- mosquitos seem to just love me and I always get bitten so badly so this would be a definite! Is it cheating to buy something for the trip? If not, I'd probably get a kindle. I'm an English student and love reading, but could never pick just one book. Are tea bags a possession? Otherwise, my phone, can't live without either. As for the lucky person, I'd probably take my brother as he's in the army and would probably be good at making a camp/finding food but if the island is already habitable, I'd just take Ryan Reynolds. For very different reasons!

I describe my personal style as… Often very lazy, I love being in an old hoody and slacks. Rest of the time, I usually wear chunky knits and I can't get enough of costume jewellery. At the moment, I'm obsessed with stacking rings.

I really wish I hadn’t… Given up the piano! I wish I could play an instrument.

You may not know this about me but… (Anyone who listened to the debate already knows this but it always seems to be something that surprises people so I'll say it anyway) I used to be in the GB karate team!

Grace Hopper (VP Welfare and Community)

In ten years time I see myself… Hopefully living in London doing a job I love! So presenting, acting, producing or something welfare related, all my favourite activities.

If I had to take 3 possessions and one person with me on a desert island I would take… My ipod with an everlasting battery supply, a never ending bar of chocolate, a very comfortable bed and I would have to take my Mum with me.

I describe my personal style as… A little bit of everything rolled into one; I think my style could tick every box!

I really wish I hadn’t… Gone to arena last night - my head hurts now!

You may not know this about me but… I can touch the tip of my nose with my tongue - what a talent (laughs).

So there you have it: the hopes, regrets and confessions of your new SABB officers. It seems that with our new officers displaying talents ranging from karate to the bodily and personal styles varying between sheep onesies and costume jewellery, that we have an exciting year ahead of us.

Watch this space for a special HC interview with the new AU president Joe Batten...
