HCX Travel Guide: Dubrovnik

By Rose Maclachlan
March 12, 2013 - 8:00pm

When one initially thinks of Croatia, the usual areas suggested are Hvar and Split, whilst Dubrovnik remains largely over looked by the younger Western generation. However, situated at the bottom of Croatia, it attracts many other tourists from far and wide, especially the Antipodeans, so perfect if you love the Aussie accent! Dubrovnik’s outstanding beauty makes it seem like you are stepping back in time – it has been used as the set for Game of Thrones, so you might even be in with a chance of catching some filming. Dubrovnik has an international airport, giving you easy access to and from the city, and if you are coming from Greece or other areas of Croatia, the ease of catching a ferry is astonishing. ...

Love Lesson #8: Make Up or Fake Up?

By Imogen Groome
March 10, 2013 - 8:00pm

Adjusting to life without your ex can be tough: some have compared it to drug withdrawal. Love can be addictive – after all, what girl doesn't want to be told she's beautiful, be taken out to dinner and brought gifts? It's when the bad times outweigh the good that you have to ask yourself if it's really worth it? Having broken off a long term relationship not long before coming to university, I can say that it's very easy to be lulled into old patterns. Adjusting to life without someone you're used to having in it,  can cause you to have misconceptions about what the relationship was really like. Therefore, HCX have compiled a five-step guide to working out when a make-up is in fact just a fake-up? READ...

"A Day Off" - Weekend in Bristol

By Georgia Carnegie
March 8, 2013 - 7:00pm

Last weekend I spent the weekend in the lovely Bristol with 3 of my close friends who go to University there and 2 of my other girlfriends who came up to visit from home. I don’t know if everyone in Exeter appreciates how close and accessible this amazing city is to all of us here in Exeter, but if you book a return train ticket in advance, you can get it for as little as £7! I didn’t get my act together so got an open return with a rail card which cost me £17, which, considering I was there for the whole weekend and had the best weekend in a long time, I think was totally worth it. The train journey is just an hour and you're only a further 10 minutes or so away from the just as impressive city of Bath. READ MORE...

By Kate Dally
March 7, 2013 - 7:00pm

The hotly debated subject of whether you can ever be truly friends with an ex is a question that haunts many. It is a question as old as time, one that is frequently anguished, fretted over and often followed by the requisite “it will only end in tears”. Can you ever be proper friends with an ex? Her Campus Exeter bravely decided to pave the way for the difficult task of broaching the subject of exes and whether friendship can ever be on the cards amongst the strapping lads of Exeter. Here are the surprising responses!...

Baguettes & Bureaucracy: The Packing Essentials

By Phoebe Thomas
March 6, 2013 - 7:00pm

When packing for your year abroad, there’s inevitably going to be a few things you do not realise you need until you find yourself out there waking up with half an hour before a lecture, greasy hair and no dry shampoo!  As exciting as it is being in a new country for a year, taking advantage of the whole isle of different cheeses in my local corner shop even though it's the same size of Pennsylvania Rd Co-Op, there are still some homely things you cannot live without (fresh milk in said shop is a rarity...) Fitness Class of the Week: Ballet

By Kate Wheeler
March 4, 2013 - 7:00pm

This week’s fitness class is a somewhat surprising and unexpected choice. Prancing around in tights, a leotard and twirling around on your toes to old-fashioned music may not be your idea of an intense or enjoyable workout but ladies (and men too) think again. Ballet is definitely understated in terms of its ability to improve fitness and lose weight and I am here to extinguish any such myths that you skeptics may have. Ballet is definitely an artistic endeavor but it also requires great physical skill and puts huge physical demands on the body. Take a look at Natalie Portman’s unbelievable transformation for the film ‘Black Swan’, if that doesn’t convince you I don’t know what will. READ MORE

Love Lessons #7: Keeping the Spark Alive

By Isobel Petersen
March 3, 2013 - 7:00pm

For everyone in a relationship, after the first couple of months it is sometimes hard to make sure that those first sparks that flew between you are still around. The knife into the back of a relationship can start with something as simple as a brief lull in variety and this is a slippery slope. It is important to keep an element of surprise in the relationship, especially in the busy environment of university with assignments, sporting commitments and nights out to compete with. READ MORE

Opinions on.. Organ Donation

By Kath Daley
March 1, 2013 - 7:00pm

Unless you have ever needed an organ transplant or know someone that has, the issue of organ donation is unlikely to have crossed your radar. However, the website of the Organ Donation Register presents some scary statistics about the reality of the situation. It claims that more than 10,000 people in the UK currently need a transplant. Of these, 1000 die each year waiting, as there are not enough available. READ MORE
