The Best 5 Travel Apps For Your Smartphone

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

We all love a bit of jet-setting and ‘getting-away-from-it-all’ every once in a while but travelling can come with quite a few complications. Never fear, we have compiled a list of the best apps around to help make your travels go a bit smoother!

Here are the Top 5 Travel Apps HCX has chosen for you:

1. Posse – it’s hard when you’re in a new place to avoid the ‘tourist trap’ and find somewhere authentic to eat. Posse helps you ‘find awesome in any city’ through recommendations by its users no matter where you are in the world. Fancy a fro-yo at Bondi Beach? Perhaps a decent cup of coffee in Bali? Posse will help you find it! You can also use it at home and discover new places in your own city. And it’s free!

2. Packing Pro – described as ‘the most comprehensive, complete and exhaustive app you can ever have to plan your trip’, this is an essential if you’re prone to forgetting things before you go away. All you need to do is give it the details of where you’re going, how long for and who you’re going with and this handy little device will give you suggested lists of clothes, electronics and essential documents you will need on your trip. For just £1.99, this app could be a bit of a life-saver!

3. Touchnote – sick of sending cheesy postcards? Want to give them a more personal touch? Then you’ll love Touchnote. Free on all devices, you can turn your holiday snaps into postcards or cards and have them sent home for just £1.49 a pop! Perfect for documenting your wanderings while also letting Mum and Dad know you’re fine.

4. SayHi Translate – while we all love travelling far and wide, sometimes the language barrier is too much to be solved with the guide-book ‘key phrases’. SayHi Translate uses voice recognition as well as typing so you can translate on-the-go. It also goes both ways so you can understand what your new friend is saying! HCX love the handy little toggle which tells the app how quickly someone is talking too!

5. Hostelworld – having the most helpful backpacker website at the touch of the button is a priceless thing to have when travelling. Helping you avoid the flea-infested prison bunk-beds and the needlessly pricey hostels, Hostelworld is a great way to keep track and plan where you’re staying, especially if you’re organising on the go!

It’s already week two, and if reading these articles is making you nostalgic of summer, check out this HCX travel article on How To Cope With Post Travel Blues as well as tips on how to plan your next trip!

Hello! I'm Jess, avid writer, full of grand travel plans and slightly addicted to chai. As well as writing for HerCampus (and singing loudly in the shower) I run my own blog at www.mismatchedknitwear.com where I talk about my day-to-day life, post lots of filtered photographs and talk about food a lot. Somehow this got me into the finals of the Cosmo Blog Awards 2013. I don't know either...
