For those lucky enough to nab a ticket, last Wednesday evening was an opportunity for students to get dolled up – house colors optional – and head over to the Merchant’s Manor hotel in Falmouth for the Tremough Harry Potter Society’s annual Yule Ball.

The evening began as you would expect, with lots of music (specifically Christmas songs) and everyone trooping to the bar and buffet for food and drinks. Despite frequent interruptions to the music at first, overall I’d say it got off to a pretty good start. We were treated to a wonderful selection of Christmas carols performed by the university’s acapella choir “The Chorus”, but sadly their performance didn’t involve any singing toads…

The announcement that Hufflepuff had won the coveted House Cup this year resulted in a big cheer from the crowd, no doubt aided by Hufflepuff’s recent surge in popularity thanks to one Newt Scamander!

Finally it was time to dance the night away! Huge shoutout to the DJ for the event, or whoever had organised the playlist, because the hits just kept on coming. “Hooked on a Feeling”, known to most as “that song from Guardians of the Galaxy”, got a raving response from all of us waiting to unleash our inner nerds. A couple of tunes from everyone’s favourite Disney trilogy “High School Musical” evidently prompted what I’d say was the most hilarious moment of the evening: around a hundred adult students crowding onto the dance floor to perform the choreography to “We’re All in this Together”, a dance routine us mature folks have had memorised for over a decade. The night ended with most attendees joining in for the “Macarena”, the one and only way to truly end a party.

Altogether it was a great, entertaining event, one I attended last year and will surely go to again next year! Major props to the committee for another amazing end-of-year party, for hooking us up with the amazing venue that is Merchant’s Manor, and for providing us with so many wonderful memories to tide us over the Christmas break.
