How to Celebrate Halloween in a Non-Scary Way

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter Cornwall chapter.

Halloween night – and even the week leading up to it – promises frights, scares and general spookiness. But if, like me, you prefer curling up with a book or a movie rather than dressing in your version of a scary costume and getting terrified by your friends, then here are a few ways to celebrate the scariest night of the year without actually getting scared!

1. Watch your favourite movie

Halloween allows for people to crack open the sweet tin and begin a horror movie marathon without feeling guilty about it. However, traditions aside, it doesn’t have to be a scary one – or even a Halloween themed one. Just pop in your favourite movie or tv show and get stuck in!

2. Bake Halloween treats

It may be the scariest night of the year but it’s also the night where many people awaken the next day from a big sugar coma. Why not indulge in the sugariness and sweetness going around by baking some Halloween goodies. Skull cupcakes, pumpkin biscuits or bloody cookies (red food colouring is a must!) are just a couple suggestions to get you started.

3. Carve a pumpkin

Anyone who knows anything knows that pumpkins and their various iterations are a huge part of celebrating Halloween. Why not take this opportunity to invite some of your friends round for a pumpkin carving party? Instructions are easy to find on the internet and you’ll have a ton of fun trying to come up with different kinds of scary faces to use!

4. Go trick or treating

Who said it’s just for kids? Put on a costume, add some fake blood and go asking for candy door to door! You can make it more adult by turning it into a pub crawl of some sort. If you feel it’s too childish, help the families in your neighbourhood by giving out candy to the children who come knocking instead whilst wearing your costume!

5. Visit a pumpkin patch

Travelling may not seem very celebratory – but if you’re going to a place as fun as a pumpkin patch it’s totally worth it. You get to see actual pumpkins growing and then even get to take one home. If you don’t have one near you, try an apple orchard like Healeys farm – you might even get some cider out of it!

Halloween doesn’t always have to equal scary, so gather your mates and gorge up on sweets without the fear of frightened!
