Some people find it hard to choose what to watch after a hard day’s work, because – let’s face it – we’ve all spent a good hour or so just scrolling through Netflix unable to pick a film or a show we actually fancy watching. Luckily, 2017 has proven to be a great time for TV shows so far, whether new or old, so we’ve compiled a list of shows we think have raised the bar for light entertainment. Some of these suggestions are already on their second season, but that only means there’s more to watch!

1. Shadowhunters

Fantasy/warrior/demon people may not be your thing, but the visual effects are amazing in this show, which is now showing its second season. It’s a great story about finding out who you really are, as cliche as that sounds. And you don’t even have to have read the books first!

2. Stranger Things

This show has taken the world by storm, and the hype is real. It’s clever and touching at the same time, and I dare you not to fall in love with the character of Eleven, everyone’s favourite Eggo loving twelve year-old.

3. This Is Us

A thought-provoking, sometimes heartwrenching show, all about family and the sacrifices one has to make to be happy. It follows a family in two different timelines, the past and the present, and the acting (on top of everything else) is superb. You won’t be disappointed.

4. Luke Cage

The newest entry in Netflix’s “The Defenders” franchise, this show is unashamed of portraying the fight that African-American people go through, even in today’s world. The strength and resourcefulness of the characters throughout their struggles – particularly those without superpowers – is so inspiring.

5. A Series of Unfortunate Events

Regardless of your feelings for Neil Patrick Harris, or even if the books weren’t a staple of your childhood, the world portrayed in this series seems to be as mad as our own right now. This bleak, unfortunate world is seen through the eyes of three gifted children, who overcome their fears and prove even more intelligent than the adults around them. Happy watching! Or, in this case, unhappy watching!
