Walkin’ in a Winter Wonderland

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Now that it’s officially freezing here in the ATL, it’s time to pull out some of those winter essentials. For all you fashionistas, I’m not just talking sweaters and boots, but rather accessories to add the perfect amount of flavor to your ensemble! Wrap yourself up head to toe with scarves, hats, gloves, and anything else that’ll keep you warm. I know sometimes it can be hard to feel cute while you’re so covered, but I promise you can use these fantastic winter accessories to your advantage!

Here are some tips to make the best of the cold weather, starting from the top:

Head: To start off, you can’t go wrong with a great beanie! Beanies come in a ton of shapes and sizes, so it’s easy to find one that fits you just right. You can go with neutral tones, which will keep the focus on the rest of your outfit, or you can pull focus up to your face by putting on something a little more out there. A winter hat is also a great way to try out trends you’ve been hesitant with. For example, florals and plaids are a great way to jump on the trend bandwagon without going overboard. You can also find inspiration from our friends across the pond and try a Cossack hat. The fur is incredibly chic and it’ll do wonders for warmth. (Note: Bonus points for animal print!) If you don’t want to cover your head entirely and brave the dreaded hat hair, you can opt for earmuffs. And if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, you can always go for a knit head wrap.

Neck: Scarves! There’s no greater feeling than getting to snuggle your nose deep into your scarf when you’re trekking across campus in the freezing cold. The list of types of scarves is endless, and there are approximately a million different ways to tie a scarf. Scarves can easily be overpowering in an outfit, so make sure that if the scarf is oversized, the tones stay neutral and your top stays fitted. Another great way to go is a circle or infinity scarf. You just wrap it around your neck twice and you’re good to go. (Can’t get any easier than that!) You can also go for a snood, which is similar to an infinity scarf but smaller. Fuzzy or faux-fur snoods are trending right now, and they’re a great way to class up an outfit. If you want your scarf to be a statement in your outfit, try a daring color or print for an extra pop!

Hands: Buying the perfect pair of gloves can be tricky; there’s fit, style and comfort to think about. You can’t go wrong with a classic pair of leather gloves, no matter what color you go for. They can be pricey, but they’ll last you a lifetime, which makes them a worthy investment. If you’re not into leather, opt for a pair of knit or cashmere gloves! They’re soft as butter and incredibly classy. You can also try a pair of elbow length gloves. While these can be a pain to wear, they’re absolutely beautiful. If you’re really looking for warmth, go with a pair of mittens. Thick, knit mittens are adorable and super cozy. Try to find a pair with animals on them for an extra aw-factor. Now, I’m sure everyone is guilty of sacrificing hand warmth to be able to text at least once in their life, but I promise you, the text can wait! And if you really can’t, snag a pair of fingerless gloves or the ones with the touchscreen finger pads.

Feet: Thick socks are a given in this cold weather, but no one can see them tucked away in your boots, which means you can wear whatever you want! Get as crazy as you want and find a pair of patterned, fluffy socks that’ll keep your feet toasty. (Note: the crazier the better, and it will be our little secret.) If you’re rocking tights or stockings in this cold weather, try a pair of knee-high socks over them. It’ll instantly transform your outfit and it’ll keep your legs and feet warm! Sounds like a win-win to me.

When shopping for all of your winter accessories, make sure to keep the color and style of your coat in mind! You don’t want to end up clashing!

Now grab a hot cocoa and cuddle up in your bed with a good movie, because let’s face it, it’s too cold to actually go outside.
