The Return of the Guy Line: What Guys Like (and Hate) to See

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Dear RLEG,

I feel like no one ever notices my style. What do guys really think about the clothes I wear?

Sincerely,

Self-Conscious Dresser

Dear Self-Conscious Dresser,

For years now, people have been extremely concerned with their appearance. The clothes and accessories people choose largely contribute to their look. Generally speaking, females seem to be more fixated on this concept. They want to be perceived as uniquely styled and put together. More importantly, they want to be noticed. But what is working and what is not? What’s making that cute boy in your large lecture class notice you?

High Heels. Yes, if worn in appropriate situations, high heels are bonus points in the sex appeal department. However, heels are not going to make or break an outfit. If you can go out at night and look sexy without heels, then go for it. No guy is going to notice the difference. Plus, guys like feeling taller, more dominate. So shed those heels and focus on the rest of your outfit.

Nail Polish. Similar to high heels, the last thing guys are going to notice is your nail art. Guys are never going to point out how your nail color perfectly “matches your outfit” or is “so seasonal.” That said, it is never going to be a bad thing to have your nails painted. Just do not expect them to be noticed.

Leggings. These tight, form-fitting pants are welcome in any occasion. To those old folks who claim leggings are not pants I say who cares? Whether you need to grab a quick bite at the DUC or are perusing Frat Row, leggings are acceptable. Show ‘em what you got ladies.

Uggs and Northface Jackets. Comfortable? Yes. They are perfect for a brisk Atlanta night. Nonetheless, grow up already! Guys do not want to feel like they are pursuing a middle school girl. There are plenty of comfortable, warm alternatives that do not make you look like a little girl.

High Wasted Skirts. Who knows why, but there is just something about this look that guys like. Show off some leg, but not too much. Keep the boys guessing.

All of that being said, be unique. Follow your own style. That is the most attractive thing a woman can do. Don’t follow the trends; be the trends.
