Keeping Up with Fashion Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Fashion Week: noun; a week in September in which designers and fashion houses showcase their latest designs and trends for Spring/Summer 2015 on the runways of major cities in the fashion world.

If you are at all interested in fashion, you know that Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is an incredibly crucial week in the fashion world. Designers put out their designs, models prove themselves on the catwalk, the press determine who is shown on the pages of Vogue and the like and buyers, well, they buy… or they don’t.

From the designers to the models to the street style to the “it” girls, Fashion Week defines the trends and the success of designers for the upcoming season. So, as a budding fashionista, or maybe as a student trying to maintain a certain level of style, how do you keep up with all the designers and models of such a tumultuous and essential week?

Step 1: Keep up with the calendar.

If you’re like me and you aren’t a front seat guest of Fashion Week, this fashion calendar is your new best friend. Providing dates, times and locations of shows along with designer profiles and popular trends thus far, The Cut is your best friend.

Step 2: Don’t discriminate.

When it comes to fashion week and keeping up with shows, it’s important not to only watch the shows of those big name designers you know well. Yes, Prada, Gucci and Miu Miu are all important but explore outside your comfort zone. Check out some shows from designers you’ve never heard of and you may be surprised.

Step 3: Watch, watch, watch.

Watch shows. The most you can learn from the fashion world is learned from watching a show. The way the models strut the catwalk, the way the designs fit their bodies and the music chosen are all indicative of a designers aesthetic preference for the upcoming season. You can learn a lot about what designers are thinking from their actual runway show. The shows are live here: http://newyorkfashionweeklive.com/live

Step 4: Never fear, the internet is here.

If you aren’t a fashion junkie like myself and don’t necessarily concern your time with watching shows and stalking models, then the internet is here to save you. You can google images from any show and even find Fashion Week guides for the not-so fashion inclined. The sky… or rather, the internet is the limit.

Happy Fashion Week.
