Hairstyles for Curly Hair

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Curly hair can often be difficult to manage, especially when you’re in a rush! I frequently find myself running out of my room with my hair in a messy ponytail, simply because I don’t have the time to style it in the morning. But don’t worry, that last-minute bun will soon be a thing of the past, because here are a few easy, quick styles that will leave your curls looking runway-ready in no time!

One of my go-to styles is the super-fast, super-chic half-up, half-down look. This look literally takes a minute to achieve, and transforms your wild bedhead into luscious Botticelli curls with minimal effort on your part. Just part your hair naturally, gather two sections on either side of your head, and tie them together at the back of your head. If you’re feeling fancy, try braiding or twisting the sections to get for a gorgeous romantic look.

A variant of the classic half-up, half-down look is an equally striking, equally time-saving style that I call the headband. Gather the front of your hair to one side, and braid this section across your head to create a natural headband that crowns your locks perfectly.

If you want to step up an old favorite, try the double-tiered ponytail. Simply separate your normal ponytail into two sections, one up, one down, and secure them both with hair ties. The bottom tier will completely disappear under the top, leaving your ponytail longer, tamer, and more voluminous than ever!

When you’ve just hopped out of the shower and need to rush, the timeless French braid is your best friend. This elegant style looks much harder to achieve than it is – all you have to do is divide your hair into three sections at the top of your head, and braid down normally by crossing the sections. A bonus – if you do this while your hair is wet, you’ll get gorgeous crimped waves when you let it out of the braid.

Finally, who says buns have to be a last resort? This beautiful chignon begs to differ! To achieve this sophisticated style, separate the top half of your hair, and gather the rest into a loose ponytail. Twist your ponytail around to form a bun, and create a braid with the top section of your hair. Wrap the braid around your bun, and you’re good to go!
