The Freshmen Guide to Getting Off Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

You did it. You finally settled into college life, and you’ve established some sort of daily routine. Phew, you can take a deep breath! You’ve timed your walk to class just right, found your favorite spot in the library to study, and have made friends to sit with in class.  So, what’s next?

It’s time to get off campus and reward yourself!  Here are a couple of my favorite places to go in Atlanta and how to get there.

Getting Around

If you’re a freshman, getting off campus might seem like a real hassle, as you can’t simply jump into you or your friend’s car and go.  Don’t be discouraged. Try Uber! Download the Uber app onto your smart phone, and you will be on your way.  Uber allows you to request, ride, and pay for a car service all through your mobile phone.  Not only is Uber significantly more reliable than a taxi service, but it can also be cheaper.  When riding with friends, use the split fare feature, which allows you to divide the cost of the ride with up to 4 other people.  Now that you know how to get around – it’s time to explore.

What to Do

Virginia Highlands:

Just 10 minutes from Emory, the Highlands are one of my favorite places to go to get off campus!  If you’re looking for a good meal, this cute downtown area is the place to be. My favorite places to eat include Yeah! Burger, Murphy’s, Harry & Sons, and Noche.  There is something for everyone here, and you won’t be disappointed.  After your meal you can walk around and check out the other stores and boutiques.

Decatur:

Yogurt Tap: you have to go! Emory students live for this place, and once you go, you’ll know why.  All yogurt is made fresh in-house daily, and you’ll immediately taste the difference.  Be sure to try Almond Butter—100% natural and 100% delicious.  Other great eateries in Decatur include Leon’s and Sweet Melissa’s.

Lenox Mall:

This mall will satisfy every one of your shopping needs.  It has every store imaginable, and it’s perfect if you’re in need of a shopping spree.  If you are looking for a healthy meal, head over to the newly opened True Food Kitchen.  For those with a sweet tooth, go to Sprinkles for a cupcake, ice cream, or cookie.

Now what are you waiting for, Class of 2018? It’s time to get off campus and see Atlanta!
