An Evolution of Sneakers- From Superga’s to ‘Swedges’

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

When I was in grade school and had to wear a uniform, one of the only ways my friends and I could individualize ourselves was through our shoes. From “light-up” Sketchers to the classic low-top black Converse, to a more feminine type, to the newest Nike, “Air Jordan’s”– shoes have always been a prominent (although sometimes forgotten) aspect of one’s personal sense of style and identity. And recently, some of these “older” trends of sneakers are resurfacing for round two.

Recently, since the latter half of 2014 and into the beginning of 2015, sneakers have once again become a first choice pick for stylish footwear. Sneakers, although once viewed as perhaps only appropriate for athletic and physical activity, are now viewed not only as a fashion-forward option, but also as a multi-functional option.

From a classic, all white high-top Superga sneaker, to a trendy low-rise Adidas, to a ‘Swedge’: a combination of a hip sneaker and a ‘wedge’, sneakers are reemerging as a prominent fashion article in 2015.

Superga, an Italian shoe company, is the ideal model for an everyday sneaker. Not only do these types of sneakers come in varying styles, heights and colors, but they are also extremely multi-functional and can be worn with almost any outfit! I have seen stylish individuals debut Superga’s while wearing black jeans and an elegant top, with jean shorts and a tee shirt, or even with a feminine dress. The stylish brand, Superga, was the statement shoe of Coachella 2014!

The prominent athletic brands, Adidas, similar to Nike, have been staples for sneaker-lovers for decades. Yet, only recently, has a sportier sneaker been viewed as chic. Nike ‘Air-Force One’s’ are now a young adults favorite shoe with ripped black jeans and a loose tee. Adidas ‘Classic’s’ are now some of the most noticeable sneakers around – by taking a simple, white sneaker and adding a pop of color, this specific pair of sneakers can amplify up any outfit!

Lastly, and to some the most surprising new take on the sneaker, is the creation of the ‘Swedge.’ When I saw my first pair of ‘Swedge’s’ in a department store, my initial reaction was that such a combination could only be contradictory (combining a formal shoe with athletic gear). Yet, the introduction of the ‘Swedge’ popularized itself throughout the fashion community in no time. Now, (I take back my initial thoughts) this specific style of sneaker has proven to be the perfect juxtaposition of cute and casual, sporty and chic, yet still trendy and appropriate for more formal occasions.

Sneakers are unquestionably an aspect of fashion to keep an eye out on in the upcoming months of 2015 – they have proven to remain supportive, multi-functional, and yet still very fashionable. Now, it is your turn to go out, discover your favorite style of sneaker and join the sneaker movement of 2015 – I know I sure have!
