Dooley’s Dictionary: A Guide to the Lingo of the Emory Eagles

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Whether you’re a Freshman still learning the ropes, in high school just checking out Emory, or an upperclassman looking to see how Emory savvy you are, here are the must-know terms you need to know by the end of your Emory career.

Club Lib: Woodruff Library. At any given hour, the main library is typically bustling with Emory’s most studious. Whether you prefer the social first floor where you can enjoy some Peet’s Coffee and Tea, or a quiet and cozy cubicle in the Stacks upstairs, you’re likely to be productive and catch up with some friends on your next trip to Club Lib.

 “Club Lib’s going up, on a Tuesday…”

Mag’s: Maggie’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill.  If you’re into going out, you’ve probably spent your weekend nights at this lovely establishment after an evening of frat hopping. You’re bound to get pushed and shoved, sing Wagon Wheel, and have a convo with some of the locals. Hitting up Mag’s at least once is basically a rite of passage for Emory students. Pro tip: Befriend bouncer Rick to bypass long lines and get inside quickly.

“Is it late enough to to hit up Mag’s?”

Woody: Woodruff Residential Center. Home to hundreds of sophomores, this building is a short trek from the main campus. Not to be confused with the Woodruff P.E. Center, Woodruff Library, Woodruff Health Sciences Center, etc. If you’re on the market for some late night grub, the WREC Room in Woody is your go-to spot. If you’re not living on the Row or in Fevans, this is likely to be your future abode!

“I really wish I didn’t have to walk all the way back to Woody right now.”

Lull: Lullwater Preserve. Located just next to Woody, this scenic park is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the outdoors either with friends or on your own. With walking/running trails, a large lake, and the Lullwater Mansion (home of our president, JWags), Lull is the ticket to clear your head and get a little dose of nature on the outskirts of campus.

“Want to go for a run in Lull?”

Mansion: ATeL events at Mansion Elan. Whether it’s time to kick off the new school year, show off your Halloween pride, or welcome you back after winter break, Mansion’s got you covered. A quick Uber ride from campus, Mansion is the perfect place to break it down on the dance floor and celebrate with your fellow Eagles.

Student 1: “Are you going to Mansion tonight?”

Freshman girl: “YES!”

Sophomore/Junior/Senior girl: “NO!”

YoTap: The Yogurt Tap. This joint in Decatur has arguably the best self-serve frozen yogurt around and is a crowd favorite for Emory students. It’s made in-house daily using all-natural ingredients and it’s absolutely delicious. People come for the hype and stay for the Almond Butter froyo. Always packed with people, YoTap is a great spot to grab a guilt-free treat and socialize.

“After this week, I’ll really need a YoTap run. You in?”

Woodpec: Woodruff P.E. Center. Emory’s gym is centrally located across from the DUC and is a must if you want to blow off some steam and sweat it out! Whether you’re a fan of the elliptical, prefer doing reps with free weights, or enjoy a fun Zumba class, the Woodpec offers the perfect workout for everyone.

“I’m at the Woodpec now, and all the treadmills are taken again!”

Point: Emory Point. One of the preferred apartment units for upperclassmen, Point is a short distance from campus. Aside from the beautiful apartments, Point also offers great dining options like Fresh2Order, Tin Lizzy’s, and The General Muir. There’s also a Pink Barre, Jazmin’s Spa, Francesca’s, CVS Pharmacy, and much more, so you can take care of almost anything without even leaving the complex!

“Sorry, I can’t go tonight. I’m heading to Point for dinner, but let’s meet up later!”

Lodge: Sorority Townhouse. No, sorority members do not live in cozy bungalows made of wood. Officially called “Sorority Village,” 11 Eagle Row features ten townhouses, known at Emory as the lodges, where sorority girls live, work, and play. Each lodge has a lobby, kitchen, chapter room, and six suites. Sign up for Novemberfest so you can take a peek inside!

“I really hope we can live in the lodge next year, but let’s be real—only like 10 of us are.”

Dooley: The Sprit of Emory/Lord of Misrule. Known as the unofficial mascot of Emory, this skeleton has quite a legacy on campus—there’s even a week dedicated to him in the Spring! If you don’t know the story of Dooley, just ask any upperclassman. If you’re new here, you’ll quickly learn his catchphrase: “Presidents may come, presidents may go; professors may come, professors may go; students may come, students may go; but Dooley lives on forever!”

“I can’t wait for Dooley’s Week…I really hope it doesn’t rain this year.”

Fevans: Few and Evans Residence Halls. What used to be the favorite for first-year housing, Fevans is now home to sophomores who love the spacious rooms and study lounges, and strive to be sustainable. At some point, you’ll probably attend an event in the Few Mulipurpose Room (known as Few MPR) or, if you’re lucky, you’ll get to stroll downstairs and have class there. Although you might not appreciate the music that blares from McDonough Field on Saturday mornings, the view can’t be beat.

“I really miss living in Fevans.  Remember when…”

MJQ: The Drunken Unicorn. A crowd favorite for Emory students on otherwise boring Wednesday nights, this dance club is a go-to if you want to dress up and get down. Don’t forget to take a photo or two in front of the infamous graffiti wall and caption your Insta with some version of #MJQuestionable.

“It’s Wednesday. You know what that means: MJQ!”
