Birkenstocks are Back

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

When I went to sleep away camp back in 2005 I always used to borrow my best friend’s Birkenstocks. They were the OG clog ones (see pic below), and I came home begging my mom to buy me my own pair. I was met with much opposition, which is nothing out of the ordinary when my clothing choices conflict with my mom’s opinions. She described Birkenstocks as “crunchy granola,” a phrase I’ve come to know as completely negative and one that ultimately translates as “you’re not buying it.”

However, times are changing- what was once crunchy granola is now #in. My time has come to buy Birkenstocks, and I could not be more pumped. Birkenstocks are the perfect summer shoe since, just like flip-flops, they can be easily slipped on and don’t let your feet get all sweaty (with the exception of the clogs). Luckily there are way more styles to choose from than in 2005. Let’s take a look:

Recently I purchased my first pair of Birkenstock-type shoes not surprisingly from one of my favorite places to shop: Target. Don’t knock it til you try it. Target makes great copies of everything in style including these amazing metallic gold sandals that I’ll be wearing so much people are going to get sick of seeing them. They also come in black (a lot more practical) and a black and white animal looking print (not every shoe you own needs to be practical!)

If we’re talking actual Birkenstocks my first pick would be their white leather Arizona style sandals. They are ideal for summer when you want to pull out all the stops to make yourself look as tan as possible (maybe that’s just me). These are pretty much equivalent to a white bikini. Plus you can rock them with white jeans and not have your shoes cutting off your leg.

Add this one right next to jumbo shrimp on your list of oxy morons: designer Birkenstocks. I bet my mom never saw this one coming. My personal fave is this Isabel Marant suede tie pair that I first saw on blogger Jules Sarinana of Sincerely Jules. The ankle tie switches it up from the normal slip on look, and the grommets turn this shoe into a fashion statement.

For those of you who saved your old Birkenstocks in the back of your closet, you had the right idea. You never know when something is going to come back in style.
