Reasons Your Hometown Friends are Your “True Fam”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emmanuel chapter.

If you’re one of the lucky ones, you know what I mean when I refer to lifelong hometown friends. You wouldn’t be the same person you are today without them and your life would definitely be less exciting. Over the years you’ve self-proclaimed yourselves as family – here’s why:

When you think of a party, you instantly picture your crew.

Whether it’s dancing the night away at the bars, drunkenly skinny dipping into the lake at camp, or crashing house parties, these are your go-to people to have a good time with. Plus, you’ve most likely seen each other throw up one too many times. Here’s to many more hangovers!

You call each other the most random nicknames.

Chances are you’ve all been friends for years and these names have some elaborate story behind them. Here’s hoping it’s not too embarrassing, *cough* right, Buttcrack?

You will defend each other ’til the end.

Fun and games aside, these are the same people who will support you no matter what. They’re not afraid to stand up for you in any situation and be your strength when you need them the most. There’s a reason you have all stayed friends for so many years, people shouldn’t mess with that.

You know too much about one another.

From your most embarrassing high school moments to your current sex life, your life is always on blast. You’re quick to share your lives with one another but somehow forget they may use it against you later. It’s all in good fun, of course, but nothing is off limits when it comes to calling each other out.

They know the real you.

And better yet they accept you and love you for all of your quirks. Still trying to figure yourself out? No worries, they’ll continue to be there every step of the way.

You all like the same music.

Not only do you jam hard to the newest house music at parties but everyone will sway to their favorite country songs at the beach, too. You have a go-to playlist for when you all get together and the songs never seem to get old. Stacy’s Mom? Turn it up!

Drinking games take on a whole new meaning.

Your alcohol tolerance better be on point when you all reunite because the games never stop. You’ve created new rules on classic games together and even invented some on your own. When anyone new tries to join in they get completely flustered and can’t keep up. Hockey anyone? Yes please. How about some classic charades? Let’s get it.

You’ve seen everyone at their worst and their best.

And you still love each other just the same. There’s a comfort in knowing you’ll always be there for one another, despite whatever events may occur.

You have a group text with everyone.

Even though you may all be at different schools, this group text lets you pick up right where you left off. It’s filled with scattered plans, regretful and hilarious memories, and of course numerous pictures of those moments.

You actually care about what’s happening in each other’s lives.

You’ll make a point to check in and keep each other updated on your newest adventures and accomplishments. You probably know what’s going on with everyone’s family, too, so naturally you ask about them as well.

You uphold the qualities that make a true family.

Genuine conversations, spontaneous adventures, loyalty, and everyone’s likeness of heart holds you all together. You even bicker like families at times, but it’s never anything that can’t be overcome.

Cheers to the good times and here’s to many more! I love you endlessly, true fam. XO
