Meet This Week’s Campus Cutie: Kiley Owen (’18)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emmanuel chapter.

You may know this bubbly blonde from the many hours she’s spent working at the front desk in St. Joe’s or from hearing her perform with her ever-talented a cappella group, Acapocalypse. She’s definitely made a splash here at EC within the past two years! Read on to learn more about this week’s Campus Cutie, Kiley Owen!

Hometown: Needham, MA

Major: Developmental psychology

Relationship Status: Single

Zodiac Sign: Pisces

HCE: We know you sing in Acapocalypse here on campus. When did you first start singing? Have you been singing your whole life?

KO: Well, I starred as Mrs. Clause in my second-grade play. That really sparked my love of being in the spotlight! It was singing and acting; I really pulled out all the stops. I also mouthed all the other lines because I memorized the entire show, so… [laughs] I also did musical theater. I was very dramatic and loved singing there. I also cantored in my church for about five years. I was the person who stood at the front, raised my arms, all like, “Number 432, please rise and sing”. Then I did a cappella in high school. It was an all-girls group, which is different from the co-ed group here. That was kind of a fun transition.

HCE: That leads perfectly to my next question: what has been your favorite part about being in Acapocalypse?

KO: Probably that I get to sing, but also they’re like my best friends here on campus. We get to hang out all the time when we have rehearsal, and then we also hang out outside of rehearsal, too.

HCE: Aww, how nice! What can we expect to see at your show tonight?

KO: You can expect to see a little Justin Bieber, and a Miley Cyrus [song], which is actually a song that she hasn’t released yet. We also have a cool new sound system this year, and we’re in the auditorium [for the first time] which we’re psyched about.

HCE: We’re excited to hear it! So, to switch gears a little bit: since the holiday season is upon us, what is your favorite thing about this time of year? Any special traditions you love?

KO: That’s a tough one…. I wanna say presents but I should pick something else, right? [laughs] Oh, you know what I love? Me and my mom and sisters bake holiday cookies for the whole neighborhood. It’s fun to bake but I also get to eat all the leftovers, and that’s fun. Then we deliver them and my mom wears an elf hat… She tried to force me to wear one but I wasn’t into it.

HCE: Wow, if only I lived in your neighborhood! Since the holidays are also a time for spreading love, can you tell us about what your ideal date would be like?

KO: It would involve food, definitely. I really like Thai food. I also recently discovered El Pelon, which has really improved my quality of life. Maybe also a walk around Boston, ’cause I don’t really explore much outside of Fenway. I’m also open to suggestion from whoever may want to take me on a date! [laughs]

HCE: Have you ever done anything particularly romantic to try and “get the guy”?

KO: Okay, so in the seventh grade, it was Valentine’s Day and I was feeling a little romantic. I went down to Walgreens and purchased a heart-shaped box of Skittles, and brought it to school. I went over to the boy that I liked [at his locker] and I gave him the Skittles and said “Happy Valentine’s Day”, and then I just stood there for an awkward amount of time, probably over ten seconds. Then I said “Bye!” and walked away. Later that night, we went on a school field trip for ski club, and I had to sit with him alone on a ski lift… I stupidly asked him if he liked the Skittles and he might have said “Oh, cool” or something like that… I blocked it out a little bit [laughs] And that was the end of that.

HCE: Wow, sounds like a pretty standard awkward middle school encounter. What about now, do you have a favorite funny pickup line?

KO: I’ll just stare at a guy until he either walks away or approaches me. I like to give intense eye contact and see if can he handle it.

HCE: That’s definitely quite a statement to make. Finally, something I’ve been wondering… After admiring your hair’s resemblance to Elsa’s, I have to ask: do you have a favorite beauty routine that you swear by?

KO: Well, you know, I like to shower regularly and I really enjoy some good shampoo and conditioner… [laughs] Really, though, I don’t do anything special. My hair just air dries and that’s it!

Well it’s beautiful, just like you! Thanks for the interview, Kiley! Be sure to go see her and the rest of Acapocalypse perform tonight at 7pm in the auditorium!
