Lauren Burgess is only a sophomore here at Emmanuel, yet she has managed to emerge as a leader in the short two years she has been here. Lauren always has a smile on her face, and somehow manages to be lively during her 8am classes. She is active in many student clubs and organizations and she holds a job in the Admissions Office. She is always busy doing something! She is the CASE (Campus Activities and Student Events) Chair of Special Events, which means she’s the girl behind events such as the Clambake, and the Moonlight Breakfasts held each semester before finals. She is also Vice President of St. Joe’s Hall Council, a new organization on campus. Lauren took some time (between a Grilled Cheese Night and Accepted Students Day) to answer some questions for us including her advice on getting involved around campus.

How are you able to maintain your grades, a social life, a job, and being active in CASE, Res Hall Council, and the other clubs you are involved in? It is hard; I’m not going to lie! My two rules are: do not be involved with things that you do not love, and that academics come first. Everything I am involved in I love, which makes the time commitment easier. Emmanuel has so many opportunities for students to be involved, it’s easy to find things you want to devote time too. I am also lucky to be surrounded by very supportive and understanding friends, who I often could not get through the day without.

What would your advice be for someone who is looking to get involved around campus? Find a club or organization you are interested in and get involved! It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as you have a passion for it. Personally, I love planning events for the student body. I do not think there is anything more rewarding then standing in the middle of your event, seeing its success, and people enjoying themselves. Start off as a general member of a club and see how you like it, through learning about the club you can sense how much time and effort you want to contribute. You also meet some fantastic people along the way. Every club I know of is always looking for new members to bring fresh and new ideas to the group.

For those unfamiliar with Res Hall Council, what exactly do you do? St. Joe’s Hall Council just formed this year. We are part of Residence Hall Council, whose goal is to better the students residence experiences on campus. St. Joe’s is trying to raise funds by having our famous Grilled Cheese Nights on Fridays. The money we make will be used to buy a vacuum, granny cart, and DVD’s for St. Joe’s residents. Students would be able to leave their ids at the desk to sign them out and simply return them when they are done. St. Joe’s Hall Council also has a Floor Representative for each floor of the building. Residents can feel free to go to these representatives with issues, concerns, or ideas for the building.

What is your favorite event to plan at Emmanuel during the school year? Moonlight Breakfast! I love this event. It is a great way for students to get their minds off of the stressful finals days and just have fun.

What is coming up this spring for CASE sponsored events? Spring is one of the best times of the year. There are so many events going on… Murder Mystery Party: March 31st at 7pm in the Modular Unit Where the Wild Things Are Movie Showing: April 5th at 7 pm in the LLH Relay for Life at TUFTS: April 10 from 6 pm to 6 am Mr. Emmanuel: April 15th at 8 pm in the Gym Clambake: April 25th on the Quad Moonlight Breakfast: April 28th at 9 pm in the Cafeteria Keep your eye out for information about these events and more coming up!!!

Finish these sentences:
In my free time, I like to… Spend time with friends, cook, and do a little retail therapy.
When I need a pick me up, I… Go to Starbucks :)
My favorite class this semester is (and why)… Public Relations Writing. Although it is on Friday’s from 12-3 pm, I have learned more in this class than in any of my other writing classes. It is more laid-back and informal. Our professor has a lot of personal experience that makes the class more approachable and intriguing.
My favorite places in Boston are… The Boston Public Garden, Fenway Park, and Newbury Street.
Before I graduate, I want to… Laugh a lot and have no regrets.
In ten years, I… Want to have traveled, have a job I love, and still be in touch with my close friends from Emmanuel.
