How to Deal with Friends Turning 21 Before You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

While having a summer birthday is great, being the last friend to turn 21 can get annoying. Watching your friends celebrate and go out without you can make you feel left out. Just because they’re old enough to go to bars doesn’t mean you can’t hang out with them anymore! Here are some ways to deal with this weird situation.

1. Tell your friends you feel left out

Remind your friends that just because they’re 21, it doesn’t change who they are. If you’re seeing your friends get ready to go to bars every weekend, let them know how you’re feeling. They probably don’t know that what they’re doing hurts you.

2. Make plans together

Once you let your friends know that you feel left out, try to make plans together. There are tons fun things you can do! Do things you would do before they turned 21. Go to the movies, out to dinner, or to the mall. Like getting your nails done? Go to a nail salon and get a manicure. Is there a movie premiere soon? Buy tickets and go together!

3. Plan your birthday

While you watched your friends plan their birthday celebration, it may have made you feel left out. But when your birthday is around the corner, start thinking of how you want to celebrate. Ask your friends for fun places to go!

Even though it gets annoying being the youngest friend, think of the positives! Even though you weren’t able to celebrate all of your friends’ birthdays (with alcohol), you’ll have all of your friends be with you on yours. And if you have any friends younger than you, remember what you went through and try to do birthday things where you can include them!
