Hot New Hair Extensions and Accessories

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

Within the last year, hair extensions have become increasingly popular. Hair feathers have been spreading like wild fire throughout all age groups and hair tinsel is close behind. But what else is out there for us to stick in our hair? I’m sure some of these options will surprise you.

The most basic form of an extension is simply called a hair extension. If you want to lengthen you hair, have thin hair, or are just looking to change your hairstyle without cutting it, then hair extensions are a good choice for you. There are many different ways to get hair extensions including bonding, sewing, and infusion. They come in a variety of colors. Hair extensions done in the salon have minimal upkeep and last around 8 weeks. A great place to get hair extensions done in our Boston area is Roffi Salon on Newbury Street and the price is determined upon consult. Of course, if you do not want to go into a salon you can always purchase clip-in hair extensions, online or in stores.

As mentioned earlier, hair feathers are becoming the new trend. Girls of all ages are getting them. Feathers are a simple, yet hip way, to add a little flare to your hair. They come in a variety of colors, patterns, shapes, lengths, and widths. You can get them to look like real bird feathers or dyed bird feathers. The choices are endless!
Putting feathers in your hair is actually a very easy process. A small part of the hair is braided at the root and then a bead is slid up the braided hair. The ends of the feathers are then stuck into the bead and the bead is crimped to hold the feathers in place. Feather extensions can last anywhere from four weeks to a few months. The great thing about hair feathers is when you don’t want them anymore it is very easy to take them out. Maintenance is very manageable with feather extensions. You can shower with them, blow dry your hair, and even straighten your it.
I would definitely recommend going to Rock, Paper, Scissors on Newbury Street to get your feather extensions. They have a binder of different selections and a great staff. For a set of three feathers, of your choice, it is $45, any additional feather is $15. You can also just get a single feather for $20 or a fat feather for $28.

Hair tinsel is another kind of hair extension that is growing in popularity. While it is not as popular as the feather, tinsel is great for people with more subtle yet sparkly personalities. There are two different types of tinsel that can be put into your hair: regular tinsel and bling tinsel. Regular tinsel matches hair colors more and is one solid color. Hair bling comes in a larger variety of colors and is sparkly.
Getting tinsel in your hair looks easy but is truly an art. The hair stylist takes at most 4 strands of hair and ties the tinsel around it as close to the root as possible. If more hair is used or it is not close enough to the root, the tinsel will slide off your hair or knot further down your hair. If the latter happens and you brush your hair, both the tinsel and your hair will rip. Tinsel should stay in your hair anywhere between a few weeks and a few months. The strands will naturally fall out with your hair.
Pure hair salon is located on Harrison Ave. in Boston and is where I go to get my tinsel put in. I would highly suggest going to them because my tinsel has stayed in for 6 months! I got 8 strands of tinsel put in for $25.

Hair Metal is another kind of hair extension. These are sold in only certain salons but come in a variety of designs. If you are more risqué these would be good for you. Hair metal is clipped into the hair, so it is not permanent. It can be taken out and put back in whenever you choose.
Rock, Paper, Scissors is also selling hair metal along with their fabulous feathers. Right now they are having a 30% off sale but the regular price for a hair metal extension is $50.

Hair jewels are another kind of accessory that you can get in your hair. Hair jewels are exactly what they sound like. They are little jewels that can be heat bonded to your hair. So, while the jewels are not exactly extensions, you can make them look like extensions by putting them in a row all the way down your hair. Hair jewels really add a little pop to your hair and are great for special occasions.
Unfortunately, no Salons in Boston display that they put hair jewels in but they are sold online on a variety of websites. The jewels are heat bonded to your hair but if you feel uncomfortable just take them to your regular salon and most likely your hairdresser will not mind putting them in for you.
