Emerson Classes You Didn’t Know You Were Missing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

Being at a school such as Emerson College, it is so easy to forget that there are so many classes at this school that are just SO cool. With the amount of varied interests and organizations on campus, it is really no surprise that there are classes that will change your life that you didn’t even know existed. So, I’m taking it upon myself to bring light to some of these lesser known classes that deserve the attention that they are so worthy of.

The first class that I will spotlight is: Theater Into Film taught by professor Sunil Swaroop. In this class, students analyze the differences when varied works of theater are adapted to the big screen and vice versa. It basically looks into the changes made when pieces of art are adapted into different mediums. This is the perfect class for Emerson students because we have so much intersectionality in our interest and this class allows students to explore areas of research and learning outside of their major that they are still interested in. This class also allows you to create a piece of your own work by adapting an existing work to a different medium, which allows student to immerse themselves in the study of different forms of media and adaptation while creating something of their own.

The students that have taken this class are also extremely enamored with the professor, indicating that his teaching style was extremely instrumental in the success of the class. “I really liked the freedom that Sunil gave us to explore things on our own but still came back and gave us helpful feedback,” says Corey Malone ’17.

Some of the pieces of art that were studied in this class in past year include works of Shakespeare and Tennessee Williams. Students that are interested in taking this course can take it to cover their Aesthetic Perspective.
