Boston Guide to Running

It’s Spring in Boston, which means it’s the perfect time to whip that body into shape for summer. Even if you’ve been an avid exerciser over this long—seriously, so long—and cold—goodness has it been freezing—winter, the sun and the warmth and all those delicious smelling flowers are starting to make themselves known. It’s time to throw on those sneakers and get outside. And what better way to enjoy the outdoors than with a run? So now that you’ve decided to lace up those sneaks and take a quick jog around, it’s important to know a few of the best places to get your sweat on.

 

1.     Boston Common/Public Gardens

This may seem like an obvious one, but if you live in downtown Boston, Beacon Hill, the North End, or even Back Bay, this is the prime spot.  Running on the sidewalk can get old very fast, and it’s important to have something nice to look at. These parks have everything you need. Pretty trees, gorgeous flowers, a Starbucks on every corner. What more could a person want?

 

2.     Esplanade/Along the Charles

This route is especially nice in the morning. You can watch ducks on the Charles, and enjoy a nice scenic route. It’s usually pretty quiet, though in some places it gets loud with passing traffic. It’s also a long route as it loops around the river, taking you all over the city. It’s a good spot for a runner looking to work on endurance.

 

3.     Chestnut Hill Reservoir

This path is a bit more out of the way if you don’t live over in Chestnut Hill. This reservoir, located right next to Boston College, is a very relaxing place to run, and it’s also a great place for yoga! Situated outside the city really gives this a more low key feel, taking about much of the noise and the craziness that is Boston. If you want to get out and clear your head, this is the place for you.

 

4.     Commonwealth Avenue Mall

This route is pretty straight-forward. It’s quick and easy and it’s never as crowded as the Common, while still being in a really good area. And when you’re finished your run, just head a street over and reward yourself with some shopping on Newbury street!

 

5.     Water Front/ Harbor Walk

This is another long one as it circles from the North End down to the South End and everywhere in between. It’s a great place for a sunrise run, and a great place to run as the sun sets. It’s beautiful and serene and you’ll be surprised with some of the things you’ll see along the route.

 

Get out of that bed, turn off that Netflix, and go for a run! These are some of the greatest spots in the city to loosen those muscles and tighten that body for the summer months to come. It’s always nice to live in a city, but sometimes you need a taste of nature to really get back in touch with yourself, and these spots offer the best type of “me time” you could possibly ask for.
