Beach Beautiful: How to Look Your Best on the Beach this Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

Summertime means time to hit the beach. The salty water, strong breezes and warm sand between your toes may all sound appealing, but your hair, makeup and skin don’t appreciate your beach time so much. Learn how to leave the beach looking just as put together (and sometimes even better than) when you arrived!

1. Protect your skin

The most important factor in this list is something your grandmother could have told you: wear sunscreen! Sure, that nice summer glow might look good for a moment, but years down the line your skin could turn spotty. More importantly, getting too much sun can lead to skin cancer, a dangerous risk to take just for your perfect tan. Remember to always wear sunscreen, especially on your face. If you aren’t a fan of greasy spray-on all over your face, invest in double-duty lotions and foundations that have SPF protection. Many sunscreen companies also have sunscreen made for faces that is less oily; apply it before your make-up to get full coverage. Finally, beware of face creams and makeup that can’t be worn in the sun!

2. Go without

Less is more they always say, and that’s especially true for your beach makeup routine. The less makeup you have on, the less chance of it getting smudged. It’s no fun to spend the day worrying about whether your mascara is running or your lipstick is smeared, so if you can, try to opt out of any parts of your makeup routine you feel okay without. Concealer, blush and a nice shimmer can go a long way. If you just can’t give up the rest of your make-up routine, consider going waterproof; it can be a pain to take off at the end of the day, but during your time at the beach it can put your mind at ease.

3. Embrace beach hair

If you find yourself frustrated with the curls, knots and flyaways that happen at the beach, try embracing your beach hair instead! If you find your hair tends to knot up in the wind, prep it with some de-tangler or wavy hair mousse before jumping in the car. Then feel free to let your hair naturally achieve beach waves. If you are still not a fan of the unkempt hair, consider wearing a nice floppy hat to cover the top; as a bonus, a hat will also offer extra sun protection with a dollop of style.

Finally, try to let your appearance go a little bit at the beach this year. Sometimes a little sand in your toes, messy hair and a fresh face can be its own fun look. Beach beautiful can be achieved with or without any makeup at all.
