Baller on a Budget

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

There is something you have to accept about city schools or just college in general – it adds up. After tuition, your books, and a few nights out, you might be wondering why bank statement seems to hate you. Don’t worry, there are ways that you can still lead your glamorous lifestyle without calling home for cash. Trust me, no one wants to make that phone call.

1. Collect discount cards
Practically every drugstore, chain restaurant, and shopping center has a discount card. Apply for as many as you can! Sure you will receive a few spam emails here and there, but that is nothing compared to saving your hard earned cash. CVS , Walgreens, and Sephora are just a few places in the area that have great discounts for card holding members.

2. Invest wisely in your groceries
Shop smart. Why pay five dollars for a pint of strawberries at Shaw’s when you can buy three pints for the same price at your local farmer’s market? That may seem like a tricky word problem, but it really is simple. Make sure to research your grocery options before you buy. Check out the dates of local farmer’s markets to avoid spending needless money on supermarket produce. Also, make sure to avoid specialty shops. Before you know it, you could be spending your entire grocery budget on wine, cheese, and chocolate. Not that those don’t sound heavenly, but it’s not enough to survive off until your next pay check.

3. Hide your bank cards
Now, don’t pull a Rebecca Bloomwood and actually freeze your credit cards! Just hide them from yourself. In a shoe box or on the top of your closet will do just fine. I know it sounds like chopping off a limb, but leaving your bank cards at home can be a blessing. You can’t buy unplanned purchases if you don’t have the means. Before window shopping or a night out, make sure that you bring just enough cash for what you need. Leave your debit card at home to avoid spending on a new lipstick or late night munchies. Your wallet and waistline will thank you.

4. Have no shame!
When shopping or at dinner, make sure to ask if they have student discounts. Every percent helps! Places from Goodwill to Betsey Johnson are all avid supporters of the student discount. We aren’t made of money, so let’s save every cent we can.

5. Don’t pay for movie tickets
There is a wonderful site called Gofobo.com. It is a free website that gives its members access to free screenings to upcoming movies! It is a cheap way to feel like a VIP movie star!
