Sundance Film Festival: a whirlwind of movies, celebrities, and snowBy February 4, 2012 - 12:00pm While most of my friends slaved over reading Dystopian literature or analyzing memory disorders this winter term, I had the privilege of watching movies and playing in the snow. And no, there wasn’t a random blizzard at Elon that you somehow missed out on; don’t worry. I was one of 16 lucky students who got the chance to go to Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah this past week, and it was nothing like I’ve ever experienced in my life (in a good way, of course). Christmas in....July?By December 13, 2011 - 1:17pm I love the holiday season. From Halloween until January 1 is truly is the most wonderful time of the year with the decorations, family and friends getting together and the overall good mood it puts people in. But I have to say that I am not a fan of how the holiday season I love so much starts earlier and earlier each year. November 1st, 2011: I walk into the local Target, eager to get whatever leftover Halloween candy wasn't bought during the season. I was looking forward to bargains on Halloween decorations and major discounts on the candy! But as I rounded the corner, I discovered something rather upsetting. The entire Halloween display was gone! In its place stood a Christmas tree! In the beginning of November!... |

The Gift of GivingBy November 29, 2011 - 4:34pm I have a lot of crap. Junk. Stuff. Whatever you want to call it, I’ve realized recently that I own a lot of things and I probably don’t even need half of it. I’m almost embarrassed that a regular struggle in my life is having to decide which of the forty shirts in my closet to wear out on Friday night. Can we say #firstworldproblems? But in all seriousness. We’ve all heard, “It’s better to give than to receive,” probably dozens of times in our young adult lives, but is it true? When I was younger, I probably just shook my head and smiled in agreement while secretly thinking, “Good for you, but I’ll take my presents thank you very much.” But now that I’m older something’s got me thinking there might be more to it than I thought.... |

Thanksgiving Peanut Butter Pie!By November 10, 2011 - 5:19pm Thanksgiving has got to be one of my very favorite days of the year. What’s not to love? Family, friends and food in one place? It doesn’t get better than that. I have lots of family who live close. So every holiday, and especially Thanksgiving, the house is filled with people. It’s great. We alternate where we celebrate each year, but we always tend to divvy up the cooking. The meal is always has your typical holidays favorites – turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, etc. etc. And of course there’s always apple pie for dessert. But with my family, dessert doesn’t stop there. READ MORE |

Timing is EverythingBy November 2, 2011 - 8:56am Two papers, an exam and a presentation – that’s what I had due in my classes this week. How about you? More? How about next week? No matter when it happens, everyone has one of those weeks. Who knows, maybe even one of those semesters. READ MORE |

Don't Take Your ChancesBy October 28, 2011 - 7:12am Parents are the ones who pick you up when you fall down. They lift your spirits when you’re having a bad day. They take care of you when you’re sick. But what happens if a parent gets sick? The roles may suddenly reverse, creating a situation for a child to grow up…fast. I found out what it felt like to grow up quickly when I was in seventh grade. Although my situation was milder than most, cancer is cancer, and my mother had it. She had been diagnosed with breast cancer, although, thankfully, it was caught in the early stage. READ MORE |

Fast Forward and RewindBy October 20, 2011 - 10:00am Looking at the Course Catalogue for Spring Term the other day, I found myself realizing just how little time I have left at Elon. Fall semester Junior year may seem like eons away from the dreaded “real world”, but it’s only a short stop away. Seeing your life planned out on paper is a terrifying thing. I know people graduating this year that are the same age as me. Is that normal? What’s my next step? All these questions have popped into my mind as of late, and I can’t seem to shake them. Young at HeartBy October 8, 2011 - 11:30am “You look absolutely beautiful today, honey,” Eleanor said to me as we walked around the rose garden. I looked down at my outfit. I was wearing old gym shorts and a baggy t-shirt. I thanked Eleanor and smiled. Eleanor is a friend of mine. She is also a resident at Blakey Hall Assisted Living retirement home. READ MORE |

A Freshman Adjusting to College, and Lots of RainBy October 2, 2011 - 5:07pm I’ve been a freshman at Elon University for about five weeks, and looking back at my first month at Elon, I’ve begun to realize how much, and how little I know about college life. At home, I was basically an only child. (I have two grown half siblings.) From the moment I set foot in my suite, I realized that I was going to have to get used to compromising space and quiet time. The days of being an “only child” were long gone - I had acquired nine new roommates! I had to adjust to the fact that I needed to be considerate of their needs, instead of mine alone. I have to admit, I had a hard time sleeping the first few nights because of all the extra noise. That’s another thing to remember; not everyone has the same sleep schedule (investing in a nice sleep... |
