Spring semester means many things: better weather, Spring Break, and an awareness that summer is right around the corner. For many of us, this also means that it is time to find an internship.
To begin a more broad search for internships, try making an account with internships.com or internqueen.com. Both of these websites allow you to search a variety of different internships, both remote and on site, and will send you emails when an internship posting seems to match with your interests.
If you have an idea of what field you would like to work in, try searching with specific search terms. InternMatch and Dream Careers Global Internship Program works with students to get internships specific to certain fields.
There are also databases that focus on internships for specific fields, such as Bookjobs (for those interested in publishing or other book-related jobs), the Feminist Majority Foundation internship database (for those looking for internship opportunities with feminist companies and nonprofits), and Free Fashion Internships (for those hoping to go into the fashion industry).
Are you a minority student studying science? This list is made up of science internships that actively seek to hire minority students that are typically underrepresented in the science in an attempt to diversify the field.
Still struggling to find an internship? Don’t stress! Try using specific search terms and thinking outside of the box. For example, as an English major I could search “internship English major summer 2014” to make sure that what I’m searching fits my major and the time span I’m looking to intern within, but I could also search more specific jobs instead of English major, such as “blogger” or “writer.” Try to use the words that would be used by job postings.
