Greek Week Dance 2017

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

Every year members from each fraternity and sorority gather in Alumni Gym to cheer each other on as they compete in Greek Week Dance! The amount of practice and planning that goes into each dance is outstanding and doesn’t go unrecognized, not to mention the creative outfits and themes.

This year the emcees changed up the structure of the event by informing the crowd about each organizations philanthropy prior to them dancing. They were able to give the rest of the audience some insight about all the work the different chapters do around campus, and all the money they raise throughout the year, since many are unaware. The winners for first place got $1,000 for their philanthropy followed by second place with $500 and third place with $250. There were also guest speakers from Elonthon as well as Relay for Life to promote their events and inform those who might not have already signed up.

“I loved how Greek Week decided to incorporate every organizations philanthropy into the event, it was refreshing to see that it isn’t all just competitive and that it’s actually for a cause. Even if your organization didn’t place, you still felt that you were doing something good because the winners got money for their philanthropy and all organizations donated cans, ” stated sophomore attendee, Morgan Shearer.

Within each dance the judges were looking for creativity, difficulty, costumes and stage presence. The results were highly anticipated and the competition was strong as each group gave it their all. For the sororities, Alpha Omicron Pi took home first place with their human anatomy theme, followed by Tri Delta and Sigma Kappa. On the other hand, Beta Theta Pi placed first followed by Sigma Chi and Lambda Chi Alpha.

Jennee Blanco, a sophomore in Alpha Omicron Pi, danced for the first time in the competition this year, and shared her thoughts after her sororities’ big win. “When our name was called we did not expect it at all, but we knew that the hard work paid off!”

Proceeds of the entire event went to Elonthon making the great turnout even more of a reason to celebrate!

I am a junior at Elon University from Connecticut! I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism with a minor in Business Administration and Sport and Event Management. I have a passion for writing and enjoy incorporating that with my love for fashion, fitness and pop culture. I hope to one day move out to Los Angeles and work in entertainment news.
