Why You Should Watch Gossip Girl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elizabethtown chapter.

The ultimate young adult drama show that all your friends have seen, and yes, you should watch it too! Here’s why….

1. The Fashion

The fashion in Gossip Girl is unbelievably gorgeous. Since the characters are wealthy, they have very high-end clothes. Their lives are very posh, which is represented through their tasteful outfits. Serena tends to wear high-heels and can pull it off with skirts, dresses, jeans or shorts. She has a lot of sparkly clothes that perfectly accent her sunshine personality. Blair is notorious for her cute head-bands, and can pull off tights with basically any outfit. The men on the show also know how to strut their stuff. The suits and ties are always a classy look.

2. The Cast

The cast of Gossip Girl is phenomenal. The main characters include Serena van der Woodsen, Blair Waldorf, Dan Humphrey, Chuck Bass and Nate Archibald. In the first season, the girls attend Constance Billard School for Girls, while the boys go to St. Jude’s. Let me tell you a little bit about each character….

Serena van der Woodsen

Played by the beautiful and talented Blake Lively, Serena is the “it” girl on the show. She has long blonde hair that is always styled to perfection. She is known for getting the guys to like her, and most of her female classmates envy her. Serena has a really close relationship with her best friend Blair and her younger brother Eric. You can’t help but love her enthusiasm for life and her loved ones.

Blair Waldorf

She is Serena’s best friend. Not going to lie, her character isn’t terribly likeable in the first season. But, stick with her, and as her character develops, you’ll love her. She is also highly fashionable, like her BFF. Blair is an outspoken, feisty and loyal character. You definitely want her to be on your side. She has a knack for scheming, which she uses for good or bad. Blair is able to help her friends and sometimes even her “frenemies.” Even when Blair is unlikeable, you still love to hate her. Her character becomes more dynamic as the seasons progress, but she always has her unique “Blair” characteristics. Her attitude mellows a bit, but her fashion sense is always on point.

Dan Humphrey

The quietly attractive, mysterious intellect enters the scene in the first episode of season one. Dan is the love interest of Serena van der Woodsen. He is a pretty likeable guy, and he’s relatively easygoing. Dan is also quite intelligent. He loves reading, and is not as “in the loop” on the Upper East style of fashion or social cues. Oh, Dan!

Chuck Bass

An Upper East man, who you hate, but secretly love in the first season. Trust me ladies, he does become likeable. You just have to trust me on this one. You will probably enjoy ridiculing his outfits in the first season (it had to have been intentional). Bass will develop some more class in later seasons.

Nate Archibald

Last, but certainly not least, is the best friend of Chuck Bass. I often wonder why these two are such good friends, but, hey, whatever works! Nate is an attractive, all-around good guy. He is also a part of the elite New Yorkers. He is a close friend of Serena’s (I love their friendship!). Nate is Blair’s boyfriend in the first season, and you can decide whether you like that combination or not. Nate, in my opinion is a highly likeable character. He is kind-hearted, nice and quite cute.

3. The Location

Gossip Girl takes place in Manhattan, New York. The wealthier characters, which include Serena van der Woodsen, Blair Waldorf, Chuck Bass and Nate Archibald, live in the Upper East Side. Dan Humphrey and his younger sister Jenny live in Brooklyn, New York, a.k.a. the West Side. P.S. You can actually visit the Gossip Girl locations if you want. How awesome is that?

4. Lives of the Elite

Who wouldn’t want to learn more about living in an upscale neighborhood? Gossip Girl has you covered. It’s glamorous, has high-end parties, the right amount of drama and relationships that will keep you hooked.

5. The Drama

The show wouldn’t be as amazing as it is without the elite/non-elite clashes. Plus all the girl/boy drama just adds to the excitement. When you put on Gossip Girl, you know you’re agreeing to interesting drama dilemmas. Who doesn’t love chick flicks? If you’re the type that’s into drama, you will love Gossip Girl. Six spicy seasons to be exact!

6. The Mystery

Throughout all six seasons of Gossip Girl, the true identity of “Gossip Girl” remains a mystery. Don’t worry, I’ll never tell who it is…it adds to the overall quality of the show. It is so much fun trying to determine who “Gossip Girl” is. Do not spoil this for yourself; you’ll be glad that you waited.
