Fight Off the Effects of SAD with a Little Dorm Decor

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elizabethtown chapter.

Feeling the winter blues? Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects more than three million people every year. It’s a type of depression that is triggered by the different seasons, although winter is the most common time of year for SAD to occur. Causes are thought to be seasonal related to your circadian clock, serotonin, and melatonin levels that change with the decreased amount of sunlight.  Symptoms may include social withdrawal, low energy and hypersomnia. There are effective treatments and strategies available for SAD recommended by health professions. One piece of managing symptoms is to have a relaxed living space. Since it’s getting really cold outside and we tend to spend more time in our dorm rooms, here are some tips to make your cozy utopia:

1. Light up your Room

Honestly, lights can make such a big improvement when it comes to your room. If you are like me, you only have one fluorescent overhead light that can be obnoxious. Fairy lights or Christmas lights can make a huge difference, as they add a warm glow. Many people use a couple strands of Christmas lights and put them along the top of the walls. Alternatively, you can take fairy lights and bend them to make a design or words. Either way, some pleasant light is a great way to get through the bleak winter days.

2. Find Cozy Blankets

It’s so nice to have a throw blanket, and when getting in bed to fall asleep at the end of the day it’s warm and inviting. Even when you are doing some homework or have to read for a class a nice blanket will keep you warm and relaxed. Blankets, such as a simple throw or one that is big warm and fuzzy are a great investment.

3. Get a Rug

Some people have carpet in their room, but if you’re like me you have cold tile floor. In the morning your feet be happy to land on something soft and warm, instead of getting jolted awake by the feel of a cold linoleum floor.  A simple rug can be inviting and a great place to stretch out and do your homework.

4. Add Wall Art

Sometimes you stare out your window but by night time it gets bleak and dark. There are even wall stickers that you can get that look like windows showing views of the city or even the beach. A work of art hanging in your room is a great addition.

5. Go Green and get some Plants

Anything from a little succulent on your desk, to a everyone loves plants. If you can’t go outdoors and soak in the sunshine and the greens, why not bring it to your room?

6. Invite Friends over

The best way to fill an empty and lonely dorm room is to invite your friends over. Host a movie night or if you are overwhelmed with homework have a study session!
