Community Service = Caring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elizabethtown chapter.

Community service is an amazing opportunity for you to extend your talents to help others. It makes the group you are helping happy; simultaneously, you feel happier too. There is a plethora of service-based opportunities for you to devote your time and energy. You just need to think about when, who and why you want to help!

1. Check Out Clubs Online

Colleges are thriving in the club department. Take advantage of it! Most clubs are listed on your college or university website. Look into those and decide which ones sound attractive to you. An email or way to connect the group is usually listed. If you want to learn more about the club or aren’t sure what commitments are attached to the group, feel free to contact them to learn more.

2. Word of Mouth

Your friends or other peers are likely to be involved in service-related clubs. You can learn a lot of information by simply talking to students on your campus. Since they are members or maybe even officers of the club, they can provide you with (hopefully) accurate information. Do not be afraid to ask what they really think of the club. Is it well organized? Are there regular meetings? What is the commitment level like? And most importantly, who do they serve and what do they do to help the individual, group or organization?

3. Talk to a Professor

Professors are typically knowledgeable about what clubs are available on campus. If you have a good working relationship with them, then you can probably discuss your interests and they can help determine a good club fit for you. Some of your favorite professors may even be in charge of a club. If they are not involved in a community-based club, see if other faculty you like are involved. It helps to have a good connection to the club and trust the person running it.

4. Benefits to Helping Out

By volunteering your time, you will gain a better appreciation for others. You will develop a greater sense of purpose in life. You will likely feel happy that you are able to dedicate your time and talents to helping others. Find a group or organization that you are passionate about, as this will increase your likelihood of being motivated and happy to help. The more you care, the more you’ll be able to truly devote yourself to helping others. It will give the organization hope for their future, and you the satisfaction that you contributed to their happiness and success. You will likely meet other students and individuals who are caring and are like-minded to you. Do not be surprised if you meet and become great friends with loving and genuinely amazing people through your volunteer time. You will likely meet individuals with stories that will break your heart, make you laugh out loud or even feel as though they experienced a miracle. Take these stories to heart and use them to continue to motivate you. The more you volunteer, the more you will feel satisfaction in your own life and develop greater senses of appreciating your little blessings in life.

Overall, community services are a wonderful way to find yourself while helping others. There are so many different organizations that would appreciate your talents. You’ll meet so many other people who share similar passions and interests. You will likely find out more about your own life and how lucky you are. Most importantly, you will be helping people that will appreciate you on an entirely new level. Your efforts will be greatly appreciated.Take time out of your busy schedule to give back to your community.
