Campus Fashionista: Abby Shepherd

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Eckerd chapter.

There’s one in every class. That girl who never fails to come to class chic and put together; meanwhile you roll into class in sweats and a t-shirt. Well, Junior Abby Shepherd is one of those girls. Majoring in Creative Writing and minoring in Art History, she definitely has an eye for fashion.

She describes her style as contemporary and vintage. She names her fashion icons as the sophisticated and classy Lucille Ball and for a more modern icon, she names Zooey Deschanel, particularly in “500 Days of Summer” She loves how Zooey takes vintage pieces and puts a modern twist on them. When asked what her perfect staple to any outfit would be, she said accessories! She believes it is the fun you get to have with an outfit; you can use jewelry to dress an outfit up or down. She says it’s an area you can be bold and daring in. Her favorite jewelry designer is Heidi Daus–she loves Heidi’s rings. She also buys a lot of jewelry form Pitaya and Kohls. Abby has so much, in fact, that her jewelry holder is overflowing!

Abby names Avenue and igigi.com as her favorite stores and she admits she does a lot of shopping online. When it comes to trends, she’ll be the first to say she’s was the worst with keeping up with them. She says it’s better to figure out what flatters your body and then make it your own. Wise words. Her ideal outfit is a feminine, comfortable dress paired with sandals or heels (depending on the occasion) and chunky jewelry. Her fashion rules to live by are: dress for your body and accessorize; jewelry can be cheap and it can make an outfit. Abby said it best when she quoted “Steel Magnolia’s” Truvy Jones, “The only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize.”

Abby was passionate when telling me about her fashion pet peeve. She said, “My pet peeve is people trying to resurrect the 80’s: neon colors, off the shoulder shirts and Kanye West shades. It needs to die. People should embrace the classic dark wash.” She is also concerned about male fashion. She says that guys in sagging jeans and ratty t-shirts are not going to make her swoon. She says nice slacks and a button down shirt goes a long way. That old-school gentleman look looks good on everyone.

Abby added that, in general, people shouldn’t be afraid to dress up. It’s not only for formal occasions. She also says girls shouldn’t be afraid of dresses. Dresses are versatile and comfortable and women need to embrace them.

Some girls have all the fun; Devon Elizabeth Williams happens to be one of them. A carb loving, liberal hailing from Lakeville, Massachusetts, Devon is a senior at Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg, Florida pursuing a  major in Political Science with a double minor in Journalism and International Relations. After spending January 2011 in an intensive Winter Term program at the United Nations in New York, Devon realized that taking over the world will be more difficult than anticipated, but nothing that a vivacious red head in stilettos can’t handle. In her free time Devon is a bartending beauty queen who has a soft spot for blueberry pie, Broadway and the scheming antics of Blair Waldorf. When she’s not paddle boarding at the waterfront or laying out on Eckerd’s private South Beach you can find Devon singing in the alto section of the concert choir. At the end of the day Devon is thankful for Newport, RI, her family, Sadie the black lab, Paul Mitchell, her girlfriends, Cheetah, and rhinestones.
