Week in Women: Her Campus’ Feminist News Round-up

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Durham chapter.

Finding reliable portrayals of female experience in the media is not always easy.  Here at Her Campus Durham we are very passionate about making sure information is both accessible and diverse so we wanted to start a regular series compiling the most (and least) compelling pieces for easy access.

The Best

Jezebel

Controversial as ever in its Op-Ed pieces, Jezebel is one of the most notorious online publications. Nevertheless, there is no denying that their news reporting on feminist matters is worth following. Women in Film Launches Sexual Harassment Tip Line reports on Kirsten Schaffer’s newly founded tip line. Following on the Harvey Weinstein and Tory assault scandals, more and more high profile victims are coming forward. We like the idea of an anonymous tip line to make whistle-blowing a bit less risqué

Rolling Stone

Known for their detailed and personal artist profiles, the Rolling Stone is as relevant as ever. In Why Do Famous Men Pressure Women Into Watching Them Masturbate the publication throws us in the deep end questioning the motives of perpetrators.

Aljazeera

This piece put quite boldly a couple issues close to our hearts: immigration and women’s rights. In The women who fear saying #MeToo, Michele LeVoy explores the cul-de-sac undocumented women find themselves in when they cannot report sexual harassment and abuse because of deportation fears.

The Worst

Featuring feminist content is not easy by any means. In this section of our round-up we wanted to pick examples of how not to do it. We love and support all forms of expression lest they counteract all the good work done by a number of media outlets.

Buzzfeed

Everyone’s favourite binge-read source Buzzfeed isn’t known for depth in their reporting, but this piece was especially annoying. The title reads: 25 Items Of Clothing Every Badass Feminist Should Own. What a feminist should own is whatever the hell she wants. Feminism is not a product for sale, it’s an ideal to pursue.
