So, You’re Going to see Shaggy at the Old Duke Concert? Whatcha Gonna Wear?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

When you go to class, you know that you need to wear your sweatpants or comfy clothes. When you go to formal, you know that you have to be dressed to the nines—makeup, a hot dress, sexy heels… the whole shebang. When you have dinner at the WaDuke, you know that your shoulders have to be covered, but that you’d better look preppy and cute. But, for a concert like Old Duke, do you know what’s right to wear? Consider the following: it could either be sunny or rainy outside, but it will most definitely be HOT. You’re going to be outside in the grass for several hours, and your toes are going to get stomped on by many a raging, drunk Shaggy fan. You’re going to be sweating, and surrounded by gyrating bodies.

Now, ask yourself again—what are you going to wear? Don’t ruin that cute new Lilly Pulitzer dress that you bought for Carolina Cup, lunch at the WaDuke, or something equally as classy. Don’t wear jeans, otherwise you’ll broil in the sunlight. High heels could get stuck in the grass, or you could end up stabbing someone in the foot accidentally when you step down and land on a shoe, instead of grass. By all means, don’t wear a sweatshirt unless you plan on misplacing it.

But what do you wear? If you’re a preppy girl, try a cute sundress. Cotton is probably the best choice, because you won’t mind tossing a cotton dress in the wash after it gets sweaty and gross. Pick something that’s colorful so that it’s less likely to show sweat stains (either your own sweat, or the sweat of that creepy stranger dancing behind you). If you pick white, you’re going to have to keep it cleaner, and lets be realistic—clean isn’t really going to happen on this day. If it’s been sunny all week and there is no chance of mud, wear flat sandals for shoes. If there’s going to be mud, try a pair of cowboy boots so your toes don’t get muddy. They’ll soften up any cutesy-girl look you might have going on, and maybe they’ll help you to attract that buff southern boy you’ve been eyeing for weeks.

If you’re a little bit hipster, try jean shorts and a flowy top. The shorts allow you maximum range of motion, so that you can get your groove on. The top will keep out the heat a little bit, which you’ll be grateful for once it starts to get crowded at the concert. Stick with aviator or wayfarer sunglasses, but keep them on your face so that you don’t get eyestrain (or, even worse, lose them!). Keep your look light and sexy; showing some skin is never a bad thing!

And, if you’re like me and all you want to do is stay comfortable, try a romper! At one point girls were judged hardcore for wearing these one-piece outfits, but now they’re in-style again. Find one with short bottoms so that you aren’t struggling to stay cool. Some rompers are strapless, which is super cute as long as you don’t have to pull the top up on your chest all day! Either way, the romper is an easy way to look totally put together, because you don’t really have to come up with any other pieces!

To store your crucial essentials (your flask, your iPhone, your DukeCard, your room key… whatever it is, we don’t judge!) try one of those hip new fanny packs out on the market. I know, I know, fanny packs are so “your mom on a family vacation.” But, Urban Outfitters has some sick new designs that make fanny packs look cool. There’s a particular teal one with studs that I have my eye on, as long as someone else doesn’t get there first! What’s most important is that you don’t lose these important things… make sure if you put them in a pocket they can’t fall out!

So, now that you’ve been provided with a little help, go shopping for a new outfit! I know Shaggy may not be the hot artist he used to be, but I promise you’ll still be singing along to his songs. Who knows, you may even want to meet him once the concert is over… and if he wants to meet you, too, you better look cute!
