Netflix and One Channel Overload: Watching TV in CollegeBy November 6, 2012 - 12:00am Even without cable or satellite, it’s easier than ever to watch TV straight from your dorm room or even from the comfort of your bed in college. Who hasn’t gone on Hulu to check for replays of Saturday Night Live? Who doesn’t have a Netflix account these days, or at least know someone who does? And if Netflix or Hulu don’t have what you’re looking for, one channel and project free tv – with less than legal compilations of the latest shows – probably do. All this can cause serious TV overload, where students feel tempted to try new shows or follow their favorites. Back at home, Mom and Dad may have turned off the television and lectured you about its mind-numbing qualities, but we leave that when we head to college. ... |

Deck Your Digits: Nail Polish Trends for the Upcoming Holiday SeasonBy November 5, 2012 - 11:59pm The Holiday Season seems to get here earlier and earlier every year. Remember when Christmas decorations did not grace the seasonal section of Target pre-Halloween? Well, no longer. But one industry that has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to the holiday is nail polish. Every year, nail polish meccas and indie companies alike release holiday collections around mid-autumn, setting the tone for the winter nail trends in the months to come. Furthermore, the holiday polish collections are almost always bursting with glitter to coincide with the lights and sparkle of the holidays.... |

HC Duke Loves: Why Duke Football is Hot Right NowBy November 4, 2012 - 12:00am Back where I’m from, in the deep recesses of the torpid Texas landscape, football is a religion that everyone follows. An intense community bond is formed under the fluorescent white of stadium lights as everyone in my little town gathered to watch the local games. And we were good. Good enough to be a big name in a big state. But it was more than just the wins that made everyone pumped—it was the rich euphoria that results from a community uniting in one common goal: to crush the opponents. READ MORE |

Why Making Decisions is the WorstBy November 3, 2012 - 12:00am I don’t know one person who likes making decisions. I also don’t know one person who likes being stuck in an indecisive phase, straddling options. Clearly the world would be a happier place if we could all just hire someone to make decisions for us. The older we get, the harder decisions become. What once was the life-changing decision of what to ask Santa for has become “Do I want to go into business or study law?” Despite the fact some of our decisions as college students now have longer-term effects, the small decisions still seem to plague us as if they carry equal weight to the big ones. Fun Fall Activities To Get Your Mind Off SchoolBy November 1, 2012 - 12:00am Fall has undeniably graced Duke’s campus with its presence—the leaves are a beautiful auburn, the tall leather boots have come out, and the café at Vondy started serving up pumpkin spice lattés again. While you might succumb to locking yourself in Perkins for the next round of midterms, do be sure to get some fresh air every once in a while. Autumn can be one of the most eventful seasons at Duke as groups start to launch major events and campaigns and Durham-area restaurants and bars host themed nights. Sometimes you have to negotiate time studying with things that are just part of the college experience! READ MORE |
