How to Make the Most of Your Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Welcome to the land of sunshine, star gazing, warm grass, and lazing around in the AC. Welcome to mornings spent in bed, afternoons spent in the sun, and nights spent under the stars. Welcome to the culmination of all things fun, warm, bright, and cheerful. Welcome to summer. After another year at Duke, after all the nights spent in Perkins, the stress of group projects, the never ending midterms, summer has finally arrived. If you’re like the majority of Duke students, 75% of your summer is probably already planned to the minute, but what about the other 25%? Instead of wasting away that part of your three months of freedom, why not try a few of these fun, easy activities?

1. Get on Pinterest

Or any other DIY website you can find for that matter! Extra time on your hands spent staring blankly at a television could be better used creating adorable decorations to spruce up your room. From monograms, to picture frames, paper flowers, to storage containers, the internet is filled with a plethora of ways to make your dorm even cuter than the year before!

2. Learn something new

Yes school is out, and yes your brain may be exhausted from the spring semester, but summer is a great time to pick up a new skill you’ve always wanted to have (maybe something Duke can’t teach you!), from conversational French to the origami. Pick a subject, YouTube some online tutorials, and get your learning on!

3. Explore somewhere new

So you’re home for the summer, and maybe you don’t have the time or the money to go someplace mysterious and far away like Europe or Australia. So what? There are local gems that you’ve probably never had the chance to visit before! Give your hometown and the surrounding area a quick Google, and see where it takes you!

4. Start a new series

Who has the time to go through an entire book/movie/Netflix series when school is in session? Now that it’s summer, it’s time to catch up on all of the trending series. Whether it’s a show, movies, or books, do yourself a favor and spend a few of those summer storms locked in your room entering a fictional world.

5. GET OUTSIDE

The weather is gorgeous almost every day—why not enjoy it? Spend some of your summer exploring the great outdoors. Besides being a great source of fun, you can also get some vitamin D and exercise!

Enjoy your summer Dukies! See you back in a in August.

I am a senior at Duke University studying psychology and history, and I have been writing with Her Campus since I was a freshman. Having this incredible community of empowering women to build me up when I need support and to give me an outlet when I need to vent has been one of the greatest aspects of my Duke career! I am so sad to leave them soon, but I am excited to pursue my J.D. at Georgetown in the fall!
