Campus Cutie: Michael Kuryshev

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Year: Freshman

Major: ECE with Econ

1. What is the funniest/weirdest thing that has happened to you at Duke?

Once, I was playing tag around midnight inside my dorm with another person, and pulled off the most amazing juke ever seen to mankind, but ran into a wall in the process and hurt my arm. I wasn’t really sure how bad it was though, and although my arm was quite swollen, finding and then getting into student health proved to be too much of a hassle, so I just stuck with ice and complaining for a few days, and everything was better within a week. I totally should’ve been a premed looking back on it now.

2. Where are you from?

I was born in Texas, but my parents are from St. Petersburg, so I pretty much grew up Russian.

3. What do you miss about home?

Breakfast because I don’t really like most American breakfast foods, and it’s nice to be around the people I love in the morning.

4. If your life was a novel, who would be the author and why?

Quentin Tarantino because I need more action and explosions in my life every now and then, not to mention that I’d be sure to meet Samuel L. Jackson at some point along the way.

5. What do you want to be remembered for?

I suppose if I had to pick one thing, my sense of humor.

6. What Hogwarts’ house do you belong in and why?

Hufflepuff: it’s more interesting to be an underdog and off the scenes for oneself (not much of a glory hog), and if you ever do something cool, you can still be happy with those around you.

7. What are you looking forward to about next year?

Being an RA on East Campus! Coming back to East to help others enjoy Duke freshmen life as much as I did will be an absolute blast and also a great learning experience.

8. Who would sing the soundtrack to your life?

Whatever group sang the intro song to Django Unchained. The combination of their voices makes for one of the most iconic intros to a movie. I’d also like to be able to feel like a badass cowboy every single time I did something even remotely awesome.

9. What’s your favorite place to visit off campus?

Cosmic Cantina: great, inexpensive food which is also open until 4am.

10. Chocolate or vanilla?

Vanilla, always and forever. Chocolate is too bitter.

11. Best joke you know?

The Cheerio Joke. Unfortunately, it is far too long to include here, but it is quite wonderful and worth checking out.

12. Worst joke you know?

Any joke told by Jay Leno.

13. Favorite bird and why?

Bald eagle, cause America.

14. If you could have any pet on campus (real or mythical) what would it be?

Tiger, I would start it off as a cub and then nurture it carefully until I could ride it to classes.

15. What line in Marketplace will you miss most next year?

Salad. Everything else provides a pleasant surprise for meals, but having the salad line consistently there for an after-meal snack is quite comforting.

16. What is your biggest goal in life?

Be close to those whom I love, all without having to worry about the little things in life.

I am a senior at Duke University studying psychology and history, and I have been writing with Her Campus since I was a freshman. Having this incredible community of empowering women to build me up when I need support and to give me an outlet when I need to vent has been one of the greatest aspects of my Duke career! I am so sad to leave them soon, but I am excited to pursue my J.D. at Georgetown in the fall!
