Campus Cute: Katie Cottam

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Name: Katie Cottam

Hometown: High Point, NC

Year: 2017

Majors: Global Health & Sociology

1. What do you love about Duke?

I love the people here. They are intelligent and driven, but still know how to have a good time. I have met some of my best friends here and I am so thankful for that. They always push me to try new things and be the best I can be.

2. What is your craziest (appropriate) Duke moment?

Last year I had to kick Chase Jeter out of Cameron Indoor Stadium. Although he had already committed to Duke at that point, he was too early and came in the wrong entrance. I felt bad kicking him out, and tried to convince the staff to let him through, but they wouldn’t budge on the rules. After breaking the news to him, I started live tweeting the encounter. He then proceeded to like all of my tweets about it. #awk

3. If you could only choose one food to eat for the rest of your life, what would you pick?

Quesadillas

4. What’s your favorite color?

I don’t have a favorite, but I do have a least favorite: purple. I may or may not have had a slight fear of the color in general…

5. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?

Madrid. Several of my friends studied abroad there, and they absolutely loved it. I would love to go experience it for myself!

6. Where is your favorite place to eat on campus?

Recently I have been obsessed with the Krafthouse. Nothing beats their fries with the Sriracha sauce. I always like to finish with an M&M McFlurry.

7. Shooters or Devine’s?

Shooters, obviously.

8. Do you have a nickname? If so, what is it?

Katie? My real name is Katherine.

9. What are you looking most forward to about senior year?

I am actually very anxious about senior year. I have no idea what I want to do post-graduation, and I don’t want to leave Duke. I’d be totally content staying a student here forever (#StopGraduation2K17).  If I had to pick something, I’d say I am excited to have my own room. After three years on campus sharing a bedroom, I will finally have a space to myself.

10. If you could give incoming freshman (Class of 2020) one piece of advice about Duke, what would it be?

Don’t worry about your “plan.” It’s okay to change your major, to participate in new activities, or to try new things. Take advantage of all the opportunities that Duke provides you with. These four years may not be exactly what you expected, but they will be some of the greatest years of your life.
