How to Dress Like a Dane: Winter EditionBy November 11, 2012 - 12:00am It’s been a while since my last blog, so needless to say, it’s been getting pretty cold in Denmark. Daytime temperatures are averaging about 45 degrees right now and it’s rainy most of the time. YAY! The weather really isn’t bad if you know how to dress for it, and believe me, the Danes do. All of us Americans here are learning pretty quickly, because it’s do or…walk around miserable. You may not need to bundle up as much back in Durham, but in case you’re one of those cold-blooded people, here are your three must-have accessories to survive the long, cold trek up the Gross Chem steps. How Close is Too Close: Would You Date Your Best Friend?By November 10, 2012 - 12:00am This weekend I took the time to watch the American chick flick classic “Clueless”. I anxiously cheered on the budding attraction between the characters played by Alicia Silverstone and Paul Rudd, but when I celebrated their long-awaited kiss during the finale, my jubilation come to a screeching halt. Sexual Harassment & The Statute of Limitations: What’s The Big Fuss?By November 8, 2012 - 12:00am All this recent awareness about Duke’s statute of limitations has made me think a lot about sexual harassment in general. Although the statute of limitations has been completely removed, this policy change won’t magically cause sexual harassment to stop happening. It’s fine to celebrate this move on the administration’s part, but there are still plenty of unspoken issues that plague our social scene. During my o-week at Duke, I showed up late to the “mandatory” Blue Devil Welcome. By the time I swiped in and found a seat in Griffith Theatre, they had already separated the girls from the guys and were presenting us with sobering facts. “By the time you graduate, one in four of you will have been sexually assaulted.” ... |

The Sexualization and Maturity Principles of HalloweenBy November 7, 2012 - 12:00am On Halloween night, on my sad, sad way to Perkins library, I observed a few girls running around in their skimpy costumes and mused that I too had dressed up as those exact things- witch, devil, angel, cat- when I was a young child. The evolution of my childlike costumes, full of festivity and charm, to lingerie-like role-play-wear is disturbing in principle. That being said, when I don’t focus on the comparison, I do tend to enjoy the intersection between sexiness and innocent fun that Halloween offers my age group. READ MORE |

Cameron Indoor Stadium vs. Eiffel Tower (yes, I’m going there)By November 3, 2012 - 12:00am When I think back to my first year at Duke, there is one experience that stands out as the defining factor of my freshman experience: the Duke-UNC game in Cameron Indoor Stadium. This moment shall forever hold a spot in the top ten best moments of my life. While I have compiled a wealth of beautiful moments during my time in college, it wasn’t until three days ago that I inhabited a moment that truly rivaled this Cameron Crazy: the Eiffel Tower twinkling at midnight. Odd comparison you might say, but humor me on this one! THE ANTICIPATION: CAMERON STADIUM: READ MORE |

Falling in Love AbroadBy October 29, 2012 - 12:00am Before you get too excited, this is not a cute story about how I met the man of my dreams on top of Table Mountain. Instead, my blog entry this week from Semester at Sea is about my whirlwind five days spent falling in love with Cape Town itself. But hey, why can’t I liken my infatuation with The Mother City to a regular courtship? 1. Love at First Sight. You had me at hello, South Africa. As I walked sleepy-eyed onto the top deck of our ship at 5:45 am to watch us pull into the Cape Town port, I had no idea what to expect. As we inched closer to Table Mountain, watching the early morning blanket of cloud engulf the city skyline beneath made my heart instantly start to melt. READ MORE |

Three Weeks Greek: My Short Lived Experience as a Sorority Girl at DukeBy October 27, 2012 - 12:00am I couldn’t tell you if it was the 27 times I’d seen Legally Blonde 1 and 2 or the millions of “Greek” TV marathons I’d delighted in as a pre-teen, but by the time I’d arrived to East Campus last fall, I was certain I was going to join a sorority. I soon realized that sorority life at Duke wasn’t about peppy college girls giving each other mani-pedis in the middle of the afternoon in a McMansion. Yet, I knew I still wanted to be a part of a sisterhood. I knew I wanted the cozy girls nights in, and the crazy girls’ nights out. I wanted the support and friendship. READ MORE |

The Trials of Finding a Man When You’re “One of the Guys”By October 26, 2012 - 12:00am I know there are many of you out there who wholly feel my pain, or can at least relate to it on some level. I have a lot of platonic guy friends, and they aren’t just acquaintances. Many if not most of my closest friends are, in fact, guys. I don’t hate my own gender (I love being a girl actually) and I don’t have “daddy problems.” I just tend to get along better with guys and generally prefer “bro time” to “girl time,” for whatever obscure psychological reason I’m sure someone could come up with.
