The Truth Behind Our University that People Love to HateBy February 11, 2013 - 12:02am Hello, My name is Taylor Turkeltaub, and I am not (or at least I would not consider myself to be) a racist, a misogynist, a misandrist, a pervert, an anti-semite, a homophobe, a classist, an ethnocentrist, or a supremacist (did I miss anything?) beyond the nominal bit that exists, unavoidably, in us all (sorry to all of you who thought you were perfect, ego-less beings but this is true.) Burning OutBy February 7, 2013 - 12:00am At the recent Lion King sing-a-long, I realized that growing up I never gave Pumbaa nearly enough credit. Not only is he kind and accepting, but he’s also spot-on about stars being “giant balls of gas burning thousands of miles away”. Many of Duke’s rising stars are also those who are burning out the fastest – think about how many people go abroad or just take a semester off altogether to get away from all the pressures and expectations that come with being a Duke student. The Greek System From an Outside PerspectiveBy January 23, 2013 - 12:00am So now that rush is over, prepare yourselves for the onslaught of girls sporting their new letters via tote bags, hats, tanks, fanny packs, coffee mugs, and pretty much every other monogrammable object imaginable. While the enthusiasm is endearing, it can also be easy to get lost in the midst of the Greek system’s many events, as well as the so-called rankings/reputations of each sorority and fraternity. While some go through their college and post-grad years convinced that these rankings are the end-all, be-all, others opt to believe that there are many other ways to interact without being restricted by these perceived social stratifications. Only you can decide which method works best for you, but personally I believe that it never hurts to be open... |

Rush Advice for People with Second Thoughts about What It Is They Really WantBy January 19, 2013 - 12:00am Rush is an extremely stressful time for everyone. You will spend a lot of time and possibly a lot of pride if you try to impress social groups, so spend these things wisely. The single most important advice concerning the rush process is to not be pressured into joining a group you don’t truly like, but that you think is “cool.” The true purpose of rush and joining a social group, though it often is forgotten or distorted, is to find a core friend group. That is all. READ MORE |

Arrivederci Florence and Hello DurhamBy January 18, 2013 - 12:00am After almost four FANTASTIC months, the time finally came for me to say arrivederci to Florence and hello to Durham. Florence was a city like no other. I saw the works of great masters of the Renaissance and walked on the same cobblestone roads as Dante, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Filippo Brunelleschi, and more recently, Guccio Gucci, Roberto Cavalli, and Salvatore Ferragamo. In Italy, I traveled throughout Europe, heard multiple languages, used different forms of currency, ate traditional foods (including absolutely amazing pasta), and fully experienced a city with such rich, long history. And although I was only there for a little less than four months, I felt like I could call “The City of Lilies” my home.... |

Living In A (Post) Feminist SocietyBy January 10, 2013 - 12:00am Being a reasonable yet opinionated individual can seem like a constant uphill battle. Issues such as gun control, abortion rights, and gay marriage are hotly debated on all sorts of media. In today's "progressive" 21st century, it often feels like vitriolic mud slinging has replaced open-minded conversation and debate, leading to a disconnect between idealism and practicality. Holding fast to one’s beliefs and morals is definitely a virtue in our attention deficit society, but what works for one individual may not be the best solution for the entire collective. This brings me to my point about feminism. READ MORE |
