10 Apps All Duke Students Should Have

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

If there’s one thing college students today can’t live without, it’s the iPhone. While this addiction may be getting a little bit out of control, it undeniably has made navigating college life a lot easier. Here are 10 essential iPhone apps that will surely prove to be useful at some point in your Duke career:

1.) TransLoc

There’s nothing worse than missing that late-night C2 and waiting fifteen minutes in the cold for the next one. TransLoc shows you what time the next buses are coming so you can make sure to be at the bus stop on time and cut down on that annoying wait time!

2.) Duke Mobile

The Duke Mobile app has practically everything Duke-related you could ever need. You can check your food and flex balance, access ACES, or find a book in the library – plus, there’s a handy map of Duke, as well as links to all the latest sports scores and campus news!

3.) IntelliDrink

“Work hard, play hard” may sound good in theory, but trying too hard to live up to it can lead to some dangerous situations. IntelliDrink is an easy way to keep track of the amount of alcohol you drink in a night and measure your BAC (blood alcohol content) so you can make sure to keep it at a safe level.

4.) Quizlet

With Quizlet, you can make flash cards online and study them on your phone. Now you can squeeze in a few minutes of quick studying next time you’re on the bus or waiting in line! Plus, you’ll save some trees by cutting down on all those paper notecards!

5.) GroupMe

If you have friends who still haven’t made the switch to iPhone (yes, they do exist), you’re probably frustrated that you can’t include everyone in group texts. With GroupMe, you can send free messages to your groups no matter what phone everyone has, making communication much easier!

6.) Charity Miles

Finding the motivation to work out can be hard in college. But with Charity Miles, money is donated to a charity of your choice for every mile you run, walk or bike! What’s a better motivation to go for a run than knowing you’re helping people in need?

7.) Pandora/8tracks/Spotify

All of these apps provide you with awesome playlists for any activity you can think of! Whether you’re looking for some calm music to help you study, old-school hip-hop to motivate you at the gym, or some good old fashioned pump up music when you’re getting ready to go out, you’re guaranteed to find the perfect mix!

8.) Netflix

It’s no secret that college students are addicted to Netflix, and with the app on your phone you can watch it whenever and wherever you want! Sneak in a couple episodes while you’re on the elliptical or when you don’t have your computer with you.

9.) Songkick

This awesome app scans your music library to find out what artists you listen to, and then tells you when they’re playing in concert near you! It’s the easiest way to find out about cool concerts.

10.) Sleep Cycle

If you’re struggling to wake up for your 8:30 or feel exhausted no matter how much sleep you get, this is the app for you. It measures how deep in sleep you are and wakes you up when you’re in the lightest phase of sleep so you’re not completely disoriented when the alarm goes off!
