The Best and Worst Parts of Adulting in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DU chapter.

We all know a girl who is way more of an adult than the rest of us. Adulting can be freeing, rewarding, and make you feel like waving your hands around like the strong, independent woman that you are. But, it also can be frustrating, challenging, and exhausting for the one doing the adulting and those around her. We have put together a list of the best and the worst parts of adulting so that you can understand your adulting friends a little more (or feel the relief of companionship for our adulting ladies out there).

The Best

Indpendence: Being an adult means running your own show- you have the power to eat popcorn for dinner and leave clothes on the floor all month if you really wanted to.

Experience: Learning how to write a resume, talk to your boss, and manage a schedule early will help you tremendously when you are out of school and trying to land your dream job.

Money management: Paying bills sucks- plain and simple. But, paying bills as a 20-something teaches you how to budget, save, and spend while you still have the wiggle-room to make mistakes.

Being a #BossBabe: Nothing will bring you more pride than figuring out how to handle your business, take care of you, and love what you do.

The Worst:

Bills, bills, bills. Bills are real. Need we say more? They come in and steal your paycheck before you can even try to treat yo’ self.

You can only turn up between the hours of 7:00PM and 9:00PM on Tuesdays. Having a set work schedule and all the responisbility of classes makes finding time for fun limiited and seemingly impossible at times.

Bed time is at 9:00PM. She doesn’t reply to your 2:00AM nervous breakdown texts because she has been asleep for hours already and will be awake before you have even begun to make your way home. The “Ah, I am so sorry! I was already in bed!” text becomes a part of your morning routine.

Adulting is hard, there’s no question about it. But learning to take care of yourself, feed your first pet, feed yourself, pay the bills and so on brings with it independence, pride, and so much experience that you’ll be forever thankful for.
