Maddie Betley, President of Phi Mu Beta Tau

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

Maddie Betley, from Haddonfield, New Jersey, is currently enrolled at Drexel as a five-year nursing student. In the fall of 2013, as a freshman, Maddie went through formal Greek recruitment. When asked about her experience, she said that she immediately knew that Phi Mu was for her and never looked back.

Fast-forward four years and Maddie is currently a fourth-year junior and has had a number of executive positions under her belt. Most recently, she was elected president of her sorority. She held the roles of vice president of programming and corresponding secretary in the past and is excited to take on the role of president. Serving as president of the chapter is far different from her past positions. She oversees all sorority operations while also supporting the rest of the executive board. Maddie also organizes monthly chapter meetings and communicates with Drexel’s Office of Fraternity and Sorority life in regards to all things Phi Mu.

Maddie considers Phi Mu’s sisterhood to be the biggest accomplishment of the sorority. According to her, all of the chapter’s accomplishments in philanthropy and the community would not mean as much if the sisters didn’t have each other to share with them. As a chapter, Phi Mu sisters complete hundreds of volunteer hours each year to fundraise for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Whether it’s through bake sales in LeBow or participating in Cycle For The Cure, Phi Mu members work together to better the community and create memories.

Maddie said that the best thing about being chapter president of Phi Mu is the girls in the sorority. Her sisters and the people around her make her proud to be a Phi Mu. Every day Maddie learns something from the other members. She’s seen ideas come to life from everyone’s dedication and hard work. One of the most difficult things about being president, though, is letting people down. She wants to look back on her time at Phi Mu and know that she’s taken the initiative to improve it.

Phi Mu has affected Maddie’s experience at Drexel completely. Being a part of the sorority has given her lifelong friends, countless memories, and the skills to further her career path. “Drexel is an incredible learning institution, but without Phi Mu, I wouldn’t have the wisdom and relationships that have helped make me who I am,” Maddie said. Once she graduates, Maddie hopes to work as a neonatal nurse in a children’s hospital. All of her co-ops have been as a nurse tech in CHOP’s N/IICU, and she’s fallen in love with caring for newborns and infants.

Phi Mu has had an enormous impact on Maddie’s career and co-op path. There are tons of nursing majors in Phi Mu that have pushed her to achieve her goals. CHOP, a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, has close connections to Phi Mi and it’s philanthropy. Maddie gets to see how Phi Mu’s philanthropic donations benefit the hospital and patients there, which she calls inspiring. Being closely connected to her sorority’s philanthropy while working towards furthering her career and doing what she loves ensures that Maddie is exactly where she needs to be.

When she isn’t on co-op or managing the chapter, Maddie likes to explore Philadelphia and go to her favorite food spots with friends. Since her hometown is close by, she tries to visit her family as much as possible. She mentioned that she’s a huge Netflix binge-watcher and loves curling up in bed to watch her favorite shows. In addition to Phi Mu at Drexel, Maddie participates in a few intramural sports throughout the year. She loves playing powder puff football and basketball.
