Julia Schumacher is a finance and accounting major here at Drexel University. She is a pre-junior currently spending her co-op at Goldman Sachs.
Julia works as an analyst in private wealth management in the management team. Her job entails managing money of very high-net individuals by investing in different assets. Being a member of the management team, Julia oversees all other teams in the office, monitoring them and assuring their work results in profits for the company. Her favorite part of working at Goldman Sachs is being able to answer customer questions when they call in, “It makes me feel like I am applying what I learned in class to the real world,” Julia said.
Julia is an extremely hard worker. She usually wakes up around 6:45 a.m. each morning, dresses for the day and then heads down to the Starbucks in the Summit to grab a coffee before she catches the trolley to work. Most mornings Julia is in a rush, so an easy morning routine is key. Her go-to outfit includes fitted dress pants, a stylish blouse and cute, but comfortable flats.
During the winter months, she loves to don comfy dresses with warm boots and a sweater. She is an enthusiast of rocking the natural look and wears a little cover-up and scant mascara. Julia will typically arrive at Goldman Sachs just before 8 a.m. and get to work right away. Around noon Julia has time to run out and get some lunch. Lately, Julia has been trying to stay healthy and save some cash by bringing her lunch but will treat herself on occasion. “You gotta have some happy in your life,” she said in regard to her cheat meals.
Julia’s day at Goldman Sachs ends around 7 p.m.. Being an active, healthy and hardworking individual Julia tries to get the gym most days after work. Her favorite exercises include running on the treadmill, using free weights, and playing the occasional pick-up basketball game. Some of Julia’s other favorite free time activities are exploring the city of Philadelphia, trying out new restaurants, seeing movies and hanging out with her friends.
Julia loves her co-op and is hoping to gain a lot out of it, “Every week or so we have to attend a meeting where we are quizzed on different finance topics, and I hope I can use what I learned in these classes in my finance classes,” she said. Working in teams, Julia has developed strong teamwork and leadership skills that she anticipates will be useful both in and outside of the classroom. When I asked Julia about what her co-op taught her about real world career fears she told me that planning helped her the most.
When getting ready for interviews, Julia noted that practicing with a friend helped her the most. “Prepare a story, think a lot about what you want to say and make it unique,” she said. Most of all she commented on how being yourself matters the most because that is who the employer wants to hear about.
