Celebrity to Makeup Mogul: Fenty Beauty Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

Pop star Rihanna launched her highly anticipated Fenty Beauty product line on September 8th at midnight. Her fans were thrilled to share the news that her products were available in a variety of shades. This is extremely exciting for the beauty community since most brands don’t create a full range of shades due to limited budgeting or need for the product. Rihanna decided to break these standards when creating her foundation, Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation ($34), and contour, highlight and blush, Match Stix Matte Skinstick ($25).

Sephora customers, Rihanna’s fans, and beauty influencers online were obsessing over the low price for high-end foundation and its long-lasting wear and matte effect. In over several reviews, it was said that this foundation only works for those with oily to combination skin and had been compared to Yves Saint Laurent All Hours Full Coverage Matte Foundation. Rihanna’s fans and highlighter fairies waited tirelessly for the Kilawatt Highlighters ($34), which featured colors including Mean Money & Hu$tla Baby, Ginger Binge & Moscow Mule, Girl Next Door & Chic Phreak, Lighting Dust & Fire Crystal, Metal Moon and Trophy Wife. Trophy Wife was created to give a major glam vibe that exists on the runways.

Other than internet celebrity Jeffree Star’s own line of highlighters and Fenty Beauty, no other brand has created a highlighter that extorts such extreme color. I personally was not a fan of the Mean Money & Hu$tla Baby highlighter after I purchased it and tried it at home. I wore it during my campus’ Night On The Row, in which my sorority was meeting students who wished to go Greek. The highlighter did not last at all and made my skin look greasy compared to my favorite highlights from Hourglass and MAC. I disliked all the photos I took when wearing the Fenty highlighter, so I only suggest that product if you are not going to be taking photos. Although the product gave me a negative experience, I was impressed with the Glass Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer ($18) that Rihanna had created for all skin tones. This product has a distinctive look on every individual and is supposed to make the lips look extremely glossy and chic-looking. This lip gloss is extremely close to a perfect five-star rating where the fifth star is almost completely filled in. The consistency of this lip shine is proven to be loved since it is not goopy and doesn’t create a glue-like effect when rubbing your lips together.

This line of products in which Rihanna has been expanding upon is highly controversial within the beauty community since people of deeper skin tones believe Fenty Beauty’s deepest shades of makeup were not inclusive to all women, even though it is advertised. We must remember that it’s extremely difficult for a beauty line to create shades for women of all colors, but these brands must eventually address it since it is beauty discrimination. However, kudos to Rihanna on a successful launch of her line!
