Tips for Virtual Internships

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DESU chapter.

Tips for Virtual Internships

No matter your major, you’re told you need an internship. Internships are slightly difficult to do when it’s the middle of the semester and you’re studying for exams. Many internships will require you to travel and spends tons of time at a specific location. Virtual Internships are the easiest avenue to take mid semester. Here’s a few tips on how to score one.

Find a reliable and legit website

When I was looking for a virtual internship, last semester, I stumbled upon a variety of sites. The thing is you want a site that’s extremely reliable. The site I used is Internships.com

Internships.com is a site that was created and operated by Chegg. It’s super simple to use. Once you upload your resume, you can easily apply for internships on the site. You can type in virtual and find a ton of internships that you can apply for.

Get a feel for the company

Even with a virtual internship, you need to get a feel for the company. If you’ve found an internship you’re extremely interested in then do your research. Check out their website and social media pages. See how the company operates, how they get started, and the founders of the company. This gives you a chance to properly see if the company is the one for you.

Be timely

If you were to go to an actual office location you would have deadlines. With virtual internships it’s the same thing except your in your bed with your pajamas on. In my offer letters that I got deadlines are extremely important. If I didn’t submit an article on time, then I could potentially lose the internship. It’s important to stay on top of your deadlines so you don’t compromise the internship.

Take advantage of the internship

Since it’s virtual, you won’t be running around grabbing coffee and donuts for the boss. If the company is the right fit, then you should be able to offer suggestions. With both of my internships I was able to give my ideas to the people I was working with. The majority of the time I was allowed to go through with my ideas. There were a few times I had to tweak it to make sure the project I wanted to do actually fit into the company.

Don’t take too much on

This is super important. We’re in school and don’t have time for multiple internships. I can admit when I first decided to have two internships I was in over my head. I had articles due on the same day around the same time. It became too much and I started to find myself slipping behind. Luckily, I was able to talk to the people I was working with and I was able to have two different deadline dates so I didn’t miss anything. I wouldn’t suggest doing more then one internship at a time. Even with virtual ones it can become too much.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

One of my internships was with a startup company. I was able to ask questions about starting my startup. Even if you don’t want to do something similar to the company you’re interning for it’s still good to ask for help. You may run into an issue with the site and can’t quite figure it out. Don’t be ashamed to ask for help. When working in the virtual world, you’ll find that people are more likely to help. Companies understand that when they’re doing business online they may run into a few issues, that’s just how the internet works. So don’t be afraid to ask for help if something isn’t working quite right. Plus it’ll give them the opportunity to see what’s wrong their site and how they can make it better.
